I went to ALA 2011 and I loved the AMV's they showed there. Props to you guys.

I was kind of saddened when I saw on the ALA AMV Contest's rules that you can't have an intro because I had an awesome Idea.

I wanted to but part of the intro from 'Pulp Fiction" (where the couple were talking about robbing the resturaunt and finally doing it, bleeping the two cuss words of course, then the the song "Misirlou" comes on) The AMV was going to use "Dead Leaves"

Ugh. It was going to be cool.

you'll find that's a common rule among amv contests. mostly because the coordinators want a professional looking show and will make their own title slides and intro clips.

you can always still make the video and then upload it here....

Is there anyway for me to get a replacement certificate? I lost mines while munching at the nearby CJ's and couldn't find it when I ran back. I tried contacting Yuusharo but I'm not getting any responses from him for some reason. :|

Hey Ryvannis, sorry I didn't get back to you. Post-con catch-up is always a pain at work, and there were some friends I had blown off in the weeks leading up to ALA, so they took all my time =).

I let Mikal know about your situation. I don't have a copy of the certificates in a PDF or anything, but we'll work something out. Send me a PM either here or Facebook with where we can send it to you in case he needs it.

Hm, well if your idea for an opening ties into the rest of the AMV, that's fine. One of our Pro entries this year was "Tomo's Gonna Stand Out" which you can find here, had an intro of sorts where Tomo is asleep and having a dream, with the entire AMV tying back to her in bed as though she dreamed the whole thing.

Stuff like that is fine. The only thing we ask is you don't put any sort of title or information regarding your video, like your studio name or something. We put our own cards up there that keeps every entry in the contest clean and consistent. But sometimes, there's even an exception to that.

Another example is our own Rider4z's "Lord of the Anime," which can be found here. This one was iffy, because the first screen you see is her studio name, followed by all sorts of information about the song, the anime used, etc. If memory serves correctly, we ultimately allowed it because the point of this sequence was to parody a movie or a musical sequence, which sets the audience up like they're about to see a stage performance with live actors and animation, rather than just another AMV. It was subtle, thought out, and different enough from merely putting random text in there that we allowed it.

Re: Anime Los Angeles 2011 AMV Contest *WINNERS*

Last one, I promise =)

I'm working to draft an all new, refreshed set of rules for this contest going forward. I'll be working with Mikal, as well as a few others who have had experience running these types of contests to collaborate on some changes that will allow our contest to be more inclusive to the entire community, and encourage folks from all different kinds of skill level to participate. Some of our best AMVs in years past have been done with Windows Movie Maker, believe it or not. You don't need expensive programs or years of knowledge to make something that the fans in the audience will love.

These new rules will be written brand new from the ground up. I want to take all we've learned over the past few years, through our mistakes and feedback from the community, and do our best to make this contest one to look forward to every year. I want to ensure that regulars are welcome year after year, while bringing in a lot of new talent and fresh ideas from people who perhaps would not have been able to participate in years past due to certain restrictions.

My goal is to make this contest friendly and inclusive to as many members of the community as possible. The one thing I hate seeing is so many people in the Anime LA threads saying how they're so sad they're not able to submit to the contest for one reason or another. There should be no reason why our contest has to be so restrictive. Unlike the Masquerade, where you are judged on workmanship for your costume as well as your presentation on stage and in front of the audience, AMVs are judged by the work the creator had done weeks or months before the contest is held. Whether you do that work in one part of the country or another, its still time consuming and something the creator is often proud of. Sometimes, real life gets in the way of what we want to do, and we shouldn't exclude people who happen to have lives that take priority over one weekend on the calendar.

These new rules won't appease everyone. Trolling, for example, still needs to be addressed and debated as far as what defines it. Depending on your definition, we've either never had a problem in the past, or we've let the problem grow out of hand! No one said this was going to be easy =(. However, I am confident that we can draft a fair, properly balanced solution that should work for most.

If anyone here finds this rather lengthy post and wants to help us out, the best way is to email amv@animelosangeles.org or visit alaamv.info and tell us what your thoughts are. The feedback from the community we get tells us what areas we need to focus on the most, and gives us some valuable information from a fresh perspective. You can also PM me here or send an email to Yuusharo@gmail.com if you'd like to get a hold of me directly.

And I apologize for making you sit through this rather long post. This is sort of my post-con wrap up that I'd like to reference to throughout the year, so that I keep on track ;).
