Re: Good laptop for converting
if your just converting movies, then the Compaq CQ56 is about right.
Simple AMD processor 64 bit, ATI video, currently on sale at Best Buy for $299.95.
I wouldn't consider it that great for editing, because its not built for it.
Keep it simple and it will work.

any particular reason why you want a laptop for this as opposed to a desktop?
Encoding is one of the few uses where the extra power afforded by a desktop can really help out, and $600-$800 should get you a decent rig.

Something like this should do:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115871
or this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115864
A quad-core would be best, but I'm not sure how well a laptop will be able to get rid of all the heat. A cooling pad would also be a good idea.
General things to look for:
-Don't expect any kind of battery life or quiet operation
-Intel Core i3, or i5, or AMD Phenom II
-3GB RAM or more
Graphics, sound and screen size won't really matter. 32-bit vs 64-bit doesn't really matter that much either.
