It was "Robot Carnival" during a Anime Marathon on Sci-Fi Channel, back in the day when they showed only Sci-Fi.

Mine was a show called Grimm's Fairy Tales, which used to come on Nick, Jr. (Nickelodeon) back in the day. I didn't even know what anime was, but I knew that the style was different from any other that I had ever seen at the time. The link on YouTube of the opening of this show should still be up.
