I enter several contests, but if a video does well I withdraw from as many as I can.

This is something I research in the contests I help administer.
I go back over the last year's contest results on the 'org and count how many "major" awards any entry has won.
If it's won three or more, it's disqualified without prejudice.
I get rather irritated when I see a video competing somewhere after I know it should have been retired.
Move over, give others a chance, and make a new video...yanno?

I hope, for your convention's credibility's sake, that this is explicitly stated in the rules.

Always.
In fact, whenever I'm involved I make sure there is anti-trolling included.
It would be unfair to enforce an unwritten rule, ya? ;)

I did |:>

The experience was a pressure cooker, but a lot of fun, win or lose. And for anyone that asked me about posting it, I plan to slightly extend the original version (sans the secret source) and post that when I can relax from working 13-14 hours days. I hope to work on it over the next couple of weekends.

Sorry I missed the actual contest though. Based on the awards it looked like a good show. Just too much else going on :( .

AUSA doesn't have a trolling policy...which in my opinion really is just kind of unfortunate. Which, no offense to those of you who had your great videos in there, as you did nothing against the rules (and I don't wanna sound like a sore looser or anything). But I know a LOT of people around me left after the action videos because they were like "Ya...we've seen all these". There were a couple in there I'd seen at every con I'd gone to in the past year and just from a viewing standpoint doesn't make for the greatest of shows.
I was also kind of confused as to how one person got two videos in the romance category, which after re reading over the rules also seems ok but still seems sorta unfair.

Congrats HalOfBorg though...your win was VERY well deserved. I laughed so hard. I was super impressed by the Iron Editor winner too...it seriously looked no different then an amv that somebody had spent a week on as opposed to a few hours.

Unfortunately, of the rest in the Comedy/Fun category, I thought HalOfBorg's entry was the only one deserving an award. It would have been a pretty weak category if the other two videos weren't in there, and that's saying something for what is usually the strongest category for most contests.

The young lady sitting beside me during the awards ceremony was confused by it, since she didn't see it in the contest. I had to explain to her what Iron Editor was and she was really impressed. I was impressed by that video as well. I hadn't seen an IE video turn out so well.

Am I guessing correctly that the secret ingrediant were the "live action" parts?

You are correct. The KISS footage was the secret ingredient (and an interesting choice, since I myself was expecting it to be the live action Detroit Metal City movie).

Thanks everyone, but to be fair, we get a little practice/prep time so I definitely didn't go into it blind. The only thing I didn't know about was the secret ingredient.

I was expecting the animated Detroit Metal City myself.

LOL well unfortunately I don't have that footage. And besides, I kinda like leaving that version in the hands of the IE realm. We just gotta frequent other convention IE tourneys to see it, myself included :P . Otakon couldn't come sooner!

I'm surprised so many people had seen so much of that contest - I actually hadn't, and was surprised by the amount of "new" stuff. I actually thought that the categories were strong, especially upbeat/fun, but a lot of the categories, I think, should have been shorter. The problem with that statement is that there aren't really any videos I can point to to say that they shouldn't have been in there, but... still, how many action videos were there? 10? That was a bit much.

Oh, and I think I've found what I'd like to call a "creative" solution to the trolling issue. It doesn't fix the fact if people have seen the video before, but each time mine has been entered, it's wound up in a different category. I might give it one last good showing, though.

I only entered "What's My Destiny Dragon Ball" simply because I could. It was meant to be an upbeat video, but given the lack of such videos (only mine and Kosmit's really qualified as such) it was lumped in with the comedy videos. I didn't expect it to win anything; I only did it because on a rainy Sunday, I said, "Hey, there's this neat video on YouTube, I wonder... what it would be like with Kai footage?" and so I did it, and I liked it. It worked out that the song itself is available on iTunes, and that 90% of the footage in the original had corresponding footage in Kai. Yeah, a basic plug-and-play video if there ever was one. I'm glad it was nicely received.

I had no major qualms about the contest despite the repeat entries of stuff that's already made the rounds. Since this contest doesn't have a "no trolls allowed" rule, I had no problems with seeing those winning videos again. I can see how people can get irritated upon seeing the same videos win the same awards, but you gotta know what you're getting yourself into when you enter.

Another fine contest you got ourselves into, Vic. Good job. You get a cookie. :)

First post updated to include all the winners.

I think Erika will agree, despite all of the practice, taunting, etc, Iron Editor felt like the two shortest hours of the year. I think if anything, we both proved that the biggest part of churning out a quality video isn't the time you spend editing, or even the capabilities of the software (I was still rocking the virtualdub/premiere 6.5 combo) but how much you put into the planning. I too plan to flesh out my IE video and release a full version, sans-secret ingredient.

Bryce Winant is my personal hero for the year for making the Nostalgia Bomb block so badass, as well as for hosting Iron Editor and staying up until ass-o-clock every morning. The Personal Hero's Sidekick award definitely goes to Jeff for rocking the IE intro and helping a ton with the editing panel when the last thing I wanted to see at the time was MORE TIMELINE.

The AUSA lack-of-trolling policy exists only because we're NOT a big contest anymore and I'm well aware of that. If I applied the Otakon rules to AUSA, we wouldn't even fill 2 hours. Everything at the AUSA contest is audience-voted, so if the audience saw a video elsewhere, they're perfectly welcome to not vote for it again.

One person getting 2 videos in 1 category happens. It happened last year as well. Instead of looking at is as CATEGORY DOMINATION ZOMG, look at it is the creator competing against themselves. That's one less first place award they can snatch up from someone else ;) Prescreenings are blind, so those deciding the contest finalists don't know who made what.

Concerning 10 videos in action: There were 36 videos in the contest. There were 4 categories. That's an average of 9 entries per category. We did it this way because if we didn't, there would have been a ton of videos in drama/romance/action, 2 in trailer, 1 in upbeat, and 2 in comedy.
