I'd prefer something unique over something rare, but if the rare story is unique in that it hasn't been seen often, but still only average, then it's toss up.

Kind of like..

Video A = Naruto + Action Music + Unique story/characterizations
Video B = [Unpronounceable Japanese title without Americanized name here] + Average storytelling + new type of storytelling/unique

Then it's a toss up.

But if the question is "would I like an anime better just because the anime is obscure?", then my answer would be a definitive "No". I judge/review/enjoy videos that I personally find superior based upon the qualities of the AMV, and not the sources that are used.

I assume here that the two videos are comparable in every way besides those two points. As in, their anime & song choice, genre, aesthetics, technical aspects, etc. are otherwise similar or equal to me personally, so that I will not be biased by these things. In that case...

I'd choose #1. If a video makes an overused source look new and original, then for me it's taken away the primary downside of overused sources--that is, the predictability, the lack of surprise. I like videos that stray from the original storyline or meaning of the anime or music, so I'd prefer #1 to #2.

However!
What if both videos had a very new & original story/plot/atmosphere and the only difference at all was the popularity of their sources? That'd be a tough choice to make.

I love seeing overused sources presented in unique ways--it can be quite a feat, coming up with new editing techniques, mixing up the clip selection, etc.
At the same time, underused sources are often underused because they're difficult to work with, or because they're just terrible and no one likes them and it's hard to make them look good. Making something entertaining out of those can be quite a feat too.

People need to get over the set stereotypes they have for different types of videos and just watch the freakin video in front of them. Is it good? Great! Is it bad? alright, then move on. Don't get hung up on certain things or a particular path that videos have to be or shouldnt be because most of the time, you're overlooking a million other aspects about said video.

I don't see any stereotypes Nya has provided. It seems to me she's just asking whether we'd rather watch a new concept AMV or a new source AMV. I assume people who are saying they'd rather watch the better video doesn't care for neither concept or source, as I don't really care for neither as well. I'd probably favor the one with the more catchier tune.

I weigh it against several factors. Do I like the anime (or think I might)? Do I like the music (or think I might)? Do I like the editor's previous work (or are willing to see based on other users' responses)?

It also swings the other way - there are some sources that I really don't have the desire to watch any more videos of. Like ef. It doesn't matter to me if there's a novel technique involved, if I'm personally sick of seeing a source used, I'm incredibly reluctant to watch a video using it. Same goes for music that has the same effect. Or the styles of certain editors that I'm kind of 'meh' about. The only thing that can counteract those factors is a convincing enough argument from others whose opinions I respect.

With new sources and lesser-used music it relies more on what I might surmise about the video and sources used, and what I know of the editor. There is also a certain novelty factor involved, but scenario #2 is much more ambiguous than the issue of an overused source. That isn't to say I avoid overused sources, it's more precisely that I tend to avoid sources I just don't like seeing anymore. And my personal source likes/dislikes aren't really affect by how 'overused' they are. If I don't like it, it doesn't take very many times for it to be 'overused' to me.

If I've never seen the anime, and don't know the story, Video_2 is going to seem just as original as Video_1. Under these conditions I would prefer Video_2 because it doesn't have the classic "what-are-they-going-to-do-with-Naruto-now?" problem that Video_1 has. I would enjoy Video_2 even moreso if the story was actually good. There is nothing wrong with rehashing the original story of an anime... except that people who have seen it may get bored.

I don't really think sources matter...as long as you use them in a way that is entertaining and creative. Thats what i think anyways, but i know a lot of people prefer to see their favorite anime being used with their favorite song...regardless of the tenacity of the editing.

Then that guitar thingies popped up and went dun dun DUN dun then those box thingies went zooming by and twirling around and shit. Oh god, then the hexagons popped up and I was like 'I just got a stiffie'. Then there was the circle with those thingies going around and I blew my load.

I think so too, but as you can see, some people have a different opinion ;x

I think I should throw in how this question was born: I was a part of a jury and the judges threw in comments. And there was one video that I liked a lot... I was pretty sure that even if it was a miss for others it would end up high because of flawless editing and great idea and its execution... but in fact it ended up pretty badly and I wondered what caused it.

And the same seems to happen literally every time someone makes any video with so-called overused source, it particularly stands out in competitions, where judges tell you "I liked the editing, this was good..." and you can FEEL that the three dots mean "but I would like it more if you didn't choose this source".

But it seems that it isn't that bad - or there are just many people who cannot admit it :>

I would go with 1. If they used an overused source I like ( Naruto, bleach, FLCL )

Which is why I enjoyed Whisper of the Beast so much |:>
