OPINIONS: Judging videos with limited experience...?

Post by sircrackpot » Sun Sep 05, 2010 11:02 pm

I was just wondering if it's normal to give critique to other editors, when the person them-self has limited experience with making quality videos? I've been tempted many times to give critique, but thought it would be a bit like a finger painter giving another finger painter advice on quality (brush-based) oil painting. I think I'm somewhat decent now in terms of editing, but have almost little to no background in effects and making anything remotely close to artsy or deep.

I figure the most I can offer is "Well, it honestly got boring here. I have no clue how you can make it better in terms of effects, but I like flashy stuff and things moving really fast. Blood is kinda cool, too." I know some news is better than no news when it comes to critique, but I feel like an asshat when I can't give solid critique. Do you guys think It should be encouraged to give ANY feedback, even if it isn't at the same quality as a veteran?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

...and your base. Which are all belong to us.

*bows*

PS: I bring this up because I posted my own stuff and feel like an ass expecting feedback when I don't give my own very often due to n00b insecurities. I'm willing to give it a go if most people don't think it's just annoying or thing it's counter productive.

When I say my skills are "decent", I mean that in "quotes". My "decent", which would be described as being a quarter-pounder with extra cheese and bacon would be different from the "decent" for people that eat fillet minion, caviar, and use funny accents. (IE, veteran editors)

Just enforcing I'm not an over-confident, pompous-ass n00b. I may possibly be a punk-ass n00b, though.

Speaking as a fellow editing n00b, I think I'd appreciate any reasonable comment/critique on a video. It's better to know that something isn't right, even if the person criticizing can't say exactly what it is.

You have your opinion. You have the right the express it. The only thing that you might not be able to judge on a perfect base would be effects, but only because you don't know about all those canned effects and cheap tricks.

I guess I can always just do it and they'll either take what I say as constructive or not. I may go and reply to whatever is posted here since many videos go without any sort of replies, which is a shame if someone put alot of work into their videos.

I guess I can just offer up what I learn from my own ventures into the higher-end editing.

You dont have to be good with advanced editing effects. If I see an effect that looks shitty and unneeded, I will critique that I dont like it, even if I barely use any effects. Either way the effect still looks like crap to me and I wouldnt want to be able to make a crappy effect.

Good point. Though my n00bie eyes are easy to please right now. With the help of a certain someone, I'll be able to call crap effects when I see them sometime in the future(as I improve).

Advanced critique is still pretty awesome, though. Just having it this one time on my Afro vid is going to upgrade me leaps and bounds. I hope that one day I can offer the same to people that are trying to improve and not sure how to really do it.

Hopefully I'll get up to the point people will post in my vid threads and say "...Effect sux. Get rid of it and then kill urself. ...the rest is ok."

Well all I have to say based in this is, I am considering not posting videos on here anymore. My videos, especially my more recent ones, I feel aren't that bad. For some reason I just posted a new one with little effects as to reflect the anime I was using and it has a 2.8 avg??? I spent 3 weeks on it! On youtube the feedback has been more positive. I dunno.....I'm tired of people not taking things at face value and looking at what matters in a video.

Effort
Timing
Use of Effects and Transitions
Not the overall HD Blu Ray quality!!!

i've critiqued throughout my whole career, even as a wmm noob on YT,

just don't expect to have your opinion respected unless you have at least ONE good video (preferably one better than what you're critiquing)

Honesty in an amv review means not only to go and just throw what you think of the amv, but also offer a way that the cretor can change what is wrong. Not all the people is in the same level, so even an experienced author should realize when he has screwed the amv. Hmm, in December I'm gonna pick a day to offer free opinions, I have to give some feedback instead of just watching
