On a technical aspect Kionon is completely right. You are only allowed to rip content off of DvD's to your computer for personal use if you own that specific copy. Renting/borrowing does not grant you ownership. If you give away a DvD to a friend legally you're giving up your rights to that video in your household as well so you should delete all copies of it you have whether digital or otherwise. Obviously very few people are going to follow that, but technically that is the ethic standards the org originally presented itself to that still stands today. There is almost no way to prove you've done otherwise but it still is the expectation of those uploading to the org.

MAC is a cosmetics brand. Mac is the superior computing platform. It's not an acronym.

I guess I'd rather have my own copies and not use DLed footage, I FEEL it gives me more control over the footage and I can filter it in my own way instead of relying on random people on the internet to filter them for me... I never said the quality of the DVDs in the USA are better than raws, I just said you have more control over how it's filtered :P

Besides the OP claims to have Blurays (or be receiving them soon) so those SHOULD be better than DVDs..

If a group has properly filtered (and many times they don't), then there is no technical benefit to having the source on a disc that you paid for. But due to the changes in technology, the conversation hasn't really been about technical benefits for years. It's really just been about "doing the right thing."

However, "the right thing" here, on the org, has included renting and borrowing for quite some time - neither of which is the "right thing" (or any different from downloading) from the POV of big content.

I don't. As you implied, you need to suggest I rent because I don't already do so. Also notice how "doing the right thing" is in quotes. Morality and ethics are certainly up for debate. There has been a general consensus on the Org from its inception on what the community values are. I dislike conversations about downloaded footage, no matter how pretty, because I find these values non-negotiable for people in this community. You don't like the rules Phade spelled out after discussion with editors of the time? Find another community that better reflects your values.

Hey now. I'm not advocating anything. Just pointing out some quirks in our reasoning (yes, "our" reasoning because it still is an accepted thing to rent or borrow DVDs on this site last I checked) that we should be able to question if we believe it to be sound and thought out and not arbitrary and capricious.

I think the best, most logical answer is don't sell your crap. And if the heat gets too hot get out of the fire. IE if you live in Italy where they have no tollerance and you don't want to be chased down lol, just quit :P but we love our Italian editors :3 the mob is scary.

I'll agree that "ethically downloading" is an oxymoron. Ethics always apply. And the act of making amvs and sharing them does not make you a pirate. The act of how you get your source may.
Your in the USA so this applies to you, the DMCA act was ammended in 2010, it is legal to purchase video media, rip said media, and use said rip to create new content. Unfortunatly music was not included in this, you still must get rights, or use creative commons music to be legal.

If you paid for the disc, and it is unrippable, I see no ethical problem with rentals, borrowing from a friend, downloading the iso and mounting to retrieve the info, etc.

That isn't piracy to me. You have the data. You shouldn't need to purchase it again.

Sweet. Any possible guilt thrown away. =) *looks for some sexy DVD rips*

I wish Gamestop still carried DVDs. Gotta love getting multiple decent DVDs for under 10 buck-a-roos. Pawnshops give me too many bad memories to raid. /random
