No, NGE is cool again because Anno stopped wangsting, they got rid of the filler (the second movie covers up through Zeruel!), and they're taking the plot in a whole new direction.

Oh, and knowing that they'll have enough of a budget to fully realize their vision for the ending this time around never hurts.

I don't see how not watching a video because it makes you feel personally uncomfortable has anything to do with being a "fair and honest judge".

The fact that it makes you feel uncomfortable is immaterial and should have been dealt with at the sign-up phase where the disclaimer was posted. The fact that it wasn't and that people don't exclude themselves before hand says something about their character when it comes to fair judging. Namely, that they are unable or unwilling to be fair or that they think exceptions should be made to fairness to accommodate their own comfort. That's not how impartiality (the cornerstone of judging) is supposed to work.

But in my eyes I am being fair and impartial. I know that even if I did watch the videos I wouldn't really know which to vote for in most cases because I'd have no real inclination of anything being better than another because they all fall outside of my own comfort zone. It's like asking a 5 year old who loves kids music to listen to two death metal bands and tell you which is the better. The kid has no idea. I have no idea. So the only way I can be fair and impartial is to remove myself from the voting of those videos, which I will do. I can still provide judging to the rest though.

If you don't like it well whoopee. I was never informed that I would be enforced to watch/vote upon all videos, and if that's a rule in future I won't enter again, but as for this year I don't really care what you say |:>

Lack of categories means you judge everything against everything else. The content doesn't need to enter into it. Or are you saying you judge action videos done with moeblob sources differently than action videos done with mech sources?

Do you understand that your reasoning holds no more weight and is no more in the spirit of the contest than if someone were to say they plan to skip all metal videos because they hate metal?

If there isn't an assumption that everyone is willing and able to preform their duties as a judge there can't be any confidence in the system and it falls apart.

To be 100% up front here, I've never entered Pro. I don't think I ever will if this is the attitude people have about it. It's really sad and terribly unfortunate that people can't seem to be honest in a contest that's generally considered to be quite praiseworthy.

I see where you're coming from, but where I'm standing I am being honest. I know that my personal feelings towards those videos might affect how I judge them so I just don't watch/judge them. Not an ideal solution I agree, but it's either that or don't enter, which I may have to consider in future.

Anyway that's all I'm saying on this matter.

Might it be useful to split the video review posts, plus related discussion, into a separate thread so that they don't keep getting lost? After all, this thread isn't even specific to the Professional contest -- pretty soon we're going to see more talk about Expo as the deadline nears.

So you're basing your entire argument on someone else opinion? The whole discussion is based on what our ideas are about participation. The Pro contest has been going on for how long now? It's been successful so far hasn't it? Or maybe all the past winners should all turn in their awards cause now it's been decided that all the participants should be unbiased and watch all the videos?

It's impossible for everyone to be unbiased. Just the act of sitting and watching the videos will create a level of bias because once you get to the end, your state of mind might not be the same as it was when you started. Should we make it mandatory that people watch only 10 videos at a time and take 2 hours breaks between sittings? That's ridiculous. If the AWA Pro contest only had legitimately unbiased judges as it's participants, there would be maybe 4 people competing, if that.

"Welcome to the candy competition little Jimmy! Candy makers from aaalll over the world made the very bestest candy they could in hopes of winning a golden twizzler!"

Jimmy - "Wowsers! This sounds great :D I hope my candy does well"

"And good luck to you littly Jimmy! However, with this competition we judge it special like. If you enter, you have to judge! So get ready to eat a little bit of everything! All of it delicious!"

Jimmy - "Yay! That sounds great! Except...I can't really have any of those super duper special eye bursting sour candies =( They don't agree with my system so I tend to avoid them...I've heard that they're only really enjoyed by select candy enthusiasts though. Besides, how can I give a good honest opinion on something that doesn't make me feel well? It'll be ok, right Mr. Disembodied Voice?"

"Oh little Jimmy...EAT IT. YOU DISGUSTING LITTLE PIG. FUCKING EAT IT. YOU LOVE CANDY AND COMPETITIONS?! THEN YOU'RE GONNA FUCKING EAT IT AND YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE IT. I'M GOING TO YELL AT YOU AND BE ANGRY UNTIL YOU STUFF YOURSELF SO FULL OF THIS CANDY YOUR GRANDMA SHITS IT OUT!"

Jimmy - "B-b-b-but...Mister...I want to help, but I don't like those kind...they really don't make me feel good... "

"Ahaha, well too bad Jimmy! Even though this is a competition about a fun hobby, we're going to say FUCK YOU AND YOUR FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND FREE WILL. YOU'RE GOING TO EAT IT AND THEN MY GOAT IS GOING TO FUCK YOU!"

Dammit, I thought the dramaz was over. The person who said it wasn't was clearly right. Oh well.

Since dramas and vid discussion are hard to do in the same thread, new thread about the videos

The quote of the Pro rules I posted earlier were there when I first started entering Pro in 2005. Ever since I first read those rules I have understood them to mean that as an entrant I am now a judge. And as a judge for a contest that allows all kinds of content in that I would be expected to watch and judge all videos, no matter the number or content. I was then asked to sign a form that says I'm fine with that content. The act of signing the form is only a statement that I understand what kind of content will be in the contest. The act of entering is my understanding of what the rules and expectations are as an entrant.

These have not changed since I first entered years ago. This isn't new. I knew very well when I first entered pro in 2005 that I would be expected to watch and judge all content including Beo's 25 min long video that no one wanted to watch. What I'm surprised about is that only now people are coming forward and saying that they read the EXACT SAME RULES that I did and did not come out with the same understanding of the expectations of the contest.

I mean, I have seen many people say that they feel it's fine to overlook videos. That they read right up front what kinds of content was going to be in the contest, and what content they would be expected to watch, and still entered anyway. THAT is what I find odd here. It's not like the coordinators were not up front about what kinds of videos would be in the contest. I mean, you had to sign a form about that content! Did you overlook this and just went through the motions because you figured it didn't pertain to you? YOU entered a contest with HENTAI! YOU entered a contest that is PEER JUDGED that contains HENTAI! YOU knew full well when you entered what is expected of you as a judge of a contest that contains material that you don't feel comfortable watching and judging. Yet knowing all of this UP FRONT you still entered?

Just for this thread, I dug up my old sig banner. It seems to still suit the org.
