What happened to gore anime?

Postby Êricō » Thu Jun 10, 2010 5:32 pm

Over the years, the appearances of anime with a significant amount of gore has been diminishing. Even the gore in "Elfen Lied" has nothing compared to an older anime like "Genocyber" for example where it even includes the organs during the process of mutilation or dismemberment.

Some people may believe that I have bad tastes but it is not the gore itself I like, but more so the impact it has when you see a character having there gut ripped out or something similar. It recreates a feeling that you are disgusted and that is what seeing gore is meant to do and therefore may even make a character's death more tragic. Also, whoever did the mutilating you would feel more compelled to hate just has some viewers dislike people who are into gore. Bad guys in newer anime, I can't seem to hate because they keep all of their actions 'clean' so to say.

I want to revitalise the 'absolute gore' genre on necessary basis and give it a deep storyline as well.

I want to know what your opinions are on gore anime like whether you like gore or not, any deep thoughts about it, or suggestions.

I saw the anime in a shop and I was tempted to buy it due to the themes it covers but I still wasn't sure if it was worth the money. Also is it gorey in like realistic gore, not exaggerated blood splatter and if there are guts, is it appropiate for the time?

Mnemosyne has lots of flesh-rending, not so much blood-spurting. Of course wounds leak blood, but it's no dokuro-chan. On the other hand, the main characters tend to regenerate and go about their business, so it may lack some of the impact you mentioned earlier.

I don't know if this counts, but Umineko no Naku Koro ni contains a lot of gory scenes to the point that it had to be censored on Japanese television.

Is it the same type of gore as 'Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni'?

The Umineko no Naku Koro ni anime is a burning piece of shit and even if it does have more gore in an uncensored version, it won't justify you sitting through a second of it.

There is less gore anime as the 80s/90s OVA market more or less doesn't exist, instead there are a lot of 13 episode tv series. And of course this being tv series they are restricted on what they can show on tv. Another reason maybe is that a lot of this shows were cyberpunk and that doesn't seem to be popular among the otaku today. Maybe gore will come back in style in a few years along tentacle porn :ying:

Either way, gore never really did anything big for me but can appreciate it when is present.

If you don't mind some positive motion with your gore you might want to often times check out Black Jack. I like it cuz it's a surgery series that actually goes into the surgery process. No they don't normally get in fights.

Kemonozume and Bakemonogatari have some gore elements, but if you want the good stuff, you should stick to the 80s.

Maybe cuz they're focusing more on actual storyline, animation, and relationships instead of gore-y action nowadays. In my opinion, gore doesn't appeal to me. Intricate fight-sequences w/ craploads of dynamic movement interest me.

BTW, I've seen too many animes where someones heart somehow ends up outside their body. Can I get an "AMEN!" :asd:

I'll admit I'm a pretty big gore-hound, but it's only a certain type of gore. I prefer it when the gore is highly stylized and over the top (Some good examples in anime would be Afro Samurai, Hellsing Ultimate, Karas, and Berserk). Stylized to the point where it's not extremely realistic or in any way 'mean-spirited.' When the violence is especially graphic or has a more sinister nature to it (Like say Apocalypse Zero) I am shocked and disgusted by it, but more than anything it simply turns me off and I have no further desire to watch it. Violence that reaches such levels of grotesqueness is simply tasteless and unnecessary, especially if the series has no cause for it to be so graphic.

I also prefer anime where the violence is more psychologically based. Now And Then, Here And There isn't nearly as graphic as other anime, but the violence it just as brutal and more appropriately depicted for the story. Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni gets graphic, but only briefly, and even then it leaves the more graphic imagery and sequences to your imagination. Such violent anime do unnerve me, but they do not disgust me to the point where I cannot watch it.

It makes sense to focus on plot more and I value the storyline of any anime more than fighting or gore. I just personally think that gore can add to character or story development by emphasizing to the audience the trauma a witness goes through.
