Switch project files between Vegas and Premiere

So I use Premiere and my friend plans to get Vega.

Since we usually assist each other on projects, is there any way for us to use each others' project files or do we always have to render the project into a video?

try EDL exports effects won't transfer but you may be able to get the time line.
