I think local contests are a good thing to motivate me, but I don't make videos only for the contests.

It's so sad that there are so many talented editors in my country that only make something once a year. For a contest/convention... =(

This.

I still don't really get into the whole contest business much though cause a part of me feels like I'm only editing to win and have to use fancy stuff/ideas. As crack said though, it is quite possibly one of the best motivators out there if you really focus on the deadline.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Yeah, contests are good motivation, but I'd still make stuff. Makin my movie, and 99% of that reason is because I have to prove to myself that I can do it, plus seeing it finished will be soooooo bad ass :3

Well, I've been making videos for 3 or 4 years, and this Sakura Con was the first AMV contest I've ever entered. And it was very enjoyable (and the fact that I won Best in Show has nothing to do with that). I loved hearing people react to something I made, and I love seeing what others did. That's the appeal of a contest to me - winning is secondary.

I always have, and I will continue to, edit to entertain people. And myself. Be that on YouTube, the Org, or a contest, that's what I love about editing.

Practically all of my recent AMVs have been created with a deadline being an upcoming convention. I can't fully say that I made them purely for the convention only, but a large part of the motivation and initial impetus are due to conventions.

The way I usually operate is, I'll have several AMV ideas at any one time. I'd usually be too lazy to make them. And then a convention comes along and all of a sudden the gears start moving and 24 hours to the convention deadline later, I'm rushing to finish a video ^_^

I definitely make certain AMV's for me and for my friends. I also love my Youtube account, it's nice to see your work appreciated. Same goes for the org, and it's very nice to get your work critiqued.

This.

Then that guitar thingies popped up and went dun dun DUN dun then those box thingies went zooming by and twirling around and shit. Oh god, then the hexagons popped up and I was like 'I just got a stiffie'. Then there was the circle with those thingies going around and I blew my load.

I've never made an AMV specifically with a contest in mind. When the contests start rolling around, I pretty much just throw what I made that year at them. Even still, I get lazy with it and usually only submit to Anime Expo.

I make AMVs mostly for fans of the anime to watch. Weather that is here, or youtube, doesn't matter to me [As long as it's *my* accounts]. As long as there's a place to show off my work, I'll keep editing, regardless of contests.

I started making videos without any real care to enter contests. I knew they existed, I just didn't care to enter. I also didn't want to enter a contest for a con I wasn't going to be at.

Now I enter contests more to get my videos out there for the general masses to see rather then to compete. Though it's fun to compete and see how well certain videos stand up against other editor's videos but that isn't really a driving force. I do make videos for cons sometimes, it's a great motivator to get things done.

In fact, anymore I doubt I would get many videos finished if I didn't have con deadlines looming over my head forcing me to sit at my PC and work on a video. Grant it, I'd have a catalog saturated with more 'fun' videos that I made on a the fly for the heck of it that way and less I'm trying to prove myself stuff... so who knows which is the better thing.

I edit because I've loved AMVs for so long now. I used to watch them with my brother all the time, and I went to my first AMV contest at AX 2004. I'm only on my second video now, but I wish I had started editing sooner. But I guess it's never to late to have fun.
