The topic of thread will pretty much be about the person that started it. If the person says they like cupcakes, then some people may actually talk about cupcakes in that intro thread. That's why there should be a limit of some sort on the thread. I'm thinking of a one week limit before the thread is locked to minimize spam and such. I'm assuming that everyone that comes to this site likes anime, music, and AMVs and would like to talk about those or themselves as creators or viewers. It wouldnt hurt to try it out and see how it goes.

This intro section can also have a sticky which FallChild and I can write up that welcomes members and features quicklinks to important topics or FAQs for new members.

I remember cupcakes - you visit those forums too? :>

I am for this idea - I think it's important to greet and help new members and those few cases in Announcement forums are kind of rare...

2) For new users it might be great to get some pointers, but people already do that in General AMV and the various Tech Help branches.

1) We are facing decrease in membership AND videos though - that's what's broken.
2) If they have a few questions, though, it's better to ask them in one thread at start. If it gets out of hand, lock it.
3) Rules for a section? No linking anywhere and you've practically dealt with these, in case they post a link you just delete/lock the thread...

To add to this post:

Most of the time, newbies rarely have a chance to "get their names" out there because they are always overshadowed by the "Elitist" on the org's posts. Newbies barely get a page worth of replies or even have people check out their vids while the elitist get like 6-10 pages worth. How are they supposed to get their names out there if no one will even look at them?

Not to mention, it'll be a thread talking about the poster themselves to get to know the person better. In most cases here, we don't even know who is male or female unless you talk to the person regularly. << I swear, if I see one more post saying "I never knew Rider was a chick!" ....

i suppose i'm an extreme case since i'm kind of awesome, but when i first came here i wasn't ignored at all, i didn't get 6-10 pages but in my 2-3 months frequenting the announcements i've seen maybe 1 or 2 threads with 6 pages, but i got around 2, and my next video i got around 3 pages, but then again i'm just a fantastic editor. :P

Reda wrote:It also forced users to get their names out there the good ol' fashioned way: by making good AMVs.

this SOUNDS good, but it also adds to the elitism of the Org, like we won't talk to you unless you're a good editor. sounds like we're very exclusive i guess. This is where youtube fills the whole. They encourage total newbies by telling them they're awesome! that's how it happened for me anyway. i imagine i'd be a lot more conformist-y if i'd have started out here.

i support this, but people aren't always ignored unless they post a yt link or just paste 3 mins of naruto episode 34 onto their favorite song,

so an intro forum isn't necessary for that reason, but it would be nice to be a bit more welcoming in one department, then we can call their shit in the announcements and they'll still think we like em and they'll stay! :o

Who exactly are you gotegenks?

Meanwhile Gote and Kaze have excellent points. And considering how tight-knit we all are, I don't see how we'd ever NOT want something similar to this.

If the fear of Youtube spamming, make them have a form, like the VidID function they MUST fill out in the forum.

Anyway, I still believe that this forum could foster a lot more creativity and great AMV's if we were just a *TAD* more friendly to new users.

this, this would fix tons of potential problems, and it's a great method for people that don't like writing about themselves, usually the people that don't have anything in their profile descriptions.

and with this i think it would further beg for an archive like godix suggested.

The solution to that is for new users to post in other people's threads to spread their name. If they put forth some effort to participate, then they're more likely to be rewarded by being welcomed into the community.

This section wont be an announcement forum and the threads will have a time limit on them. If someone wants to link to their youtube or deviantart account, I really dont see the problem. The idea is that people will introduce themselves and then stick around. Keep in mind, we have an announcement forum for announcing videos. So if we see someone using the intro thread to announce videos, we can just lock it and direct them to the proper forum. If anything, I'd expect people to check out those youtube account and post on the forums stuff like "Hey, could you upload that one video to this site?"

I think it's broken in that we have people say that this site is too cliquey or there's a bunch of inside jokes that no one understands. This could be a nice social introduction for new people.

As for getting their name out by making good AMVs, what about people who are already established AMV makers and edit well? It's often that they'll get overlooked in the announcements because people dont know their name. Then, they'll just go back to their YT accounts because they feel like they have more of an audience there.

This idea was discussed the IRC before I made the forum post. It's where we came up with the idea.

I agree with this.

I found that the best way to get people watching/responding to my announcement threads is to participate in others. Also all it takes is a bit of lurking and paying attention to the rules to figure out how this community works.

Besides most of the in-jokes we use around here didn't originate here, they are 4-chan/Encyclopedia Dramatica references.

I'm not opposed to an Intro Forum, but I don't see it as necessary either. I'd be interested to see how it goes.

I like Godix's idea of everyone making a post in it as a means of backlogging. It would be interesting to have them linked on member profiles as well to make them a bit easier to get to, but that's me asking for someone do do some coding O.o so no stress.

The problem with newbies posting in Announcement forums is they don't get anything from it - possibly "Thank you" from author, possibly "Nobody asked you" from an author who's an ass. Considering one can see so many empty announcement threads you can think like this:

"If I reply to this thread, there is still no guarantee I'll get replies to mine - so why bother"

And even if you do post, if you're alone you'll lose enthusiasm after some while when you see nothing's changed and nobody still replies.

OTOH if they see they can get some replies in Welcome threads (which are usually visited by at least a few people (from this community I am pretty sure me, godix, Kio and few others would visit it regularly to welcome newbies/scare them away) would reply and show the people they can get replies, which will lead to more active replies on boards.
