As for industry guests, I'd say maybe Kyle Hebert or Vic? Both enjoy AMVs to my knowledge and I'm pretty sure there is a certain someone on the IC board who has certain connections....

Monica Rial has guest judged on an Iron Editor or two, gets pretty into it, she's fun. Monty Oum was scheduled to be a guest judge once but instead he kinda crashed an AMV tech panel, handed out copies of Dead Fantasy and then left >_>

I'm not against the idea, but I can't say that I see this as being the kind of event that they'd be best suited for or well received at. For some reason I don't really see AMV folk as being their audience (and speaking as a former guest handler, I can't say I think too highly of the audience that follows them). That's just my gut reaction, mind you.

Kyle's a cool guy and loves amvs. I even did a video for one of his Akon panels.

Vic Mignogginakjfalef (sp?) would probably take over the event and promote himself. :x

I don't think you're pronouncing it right.

I've worked with Vic. Extremely nice guy in private, biggest attention hound I have ever seen when in public. Knows how to work an audience well though.

Re: Anime Expo 2010 Iron Chef AMV Contest

Postby Rapter79 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 12:11 am

Hello, i am your target audience (kinda). You all don't know me, and i had no idea who any of you were until this event.

However, i am Staff, and i was unable to make the first bit of it (5 min) and had to leave early (2 times, because i had to meet with friends for dinner and again to attend masquerade)
Let me preface by saying, I've never even thought the concept of Iron Chef was possible. So when i saw an ad at the AMV contest for it, i was excited. As i got in the first thing i could think of was "why is the projector not showing a color." I sat in the panel and to my surprise it was a 3 hour Q&A session about anything under the sun! Now, i know im in the minority when it comes to technical questions but dammit if i didn't how the MC (thanks for picking me those 5 times) and all i think i asked were technical questions. This isn't something i normally get to do, and i wouldn't have found out about these forums had it not been for this AMV:IC panel.

So let me comment on what i thought of overall first then go into detail about the whole thing.

First, i had a blast, i thought it was fun and i wish i could have been there the entire 3 hours. And the competition seems absurd, but it is amazing how you can edit an entire AMV in 3 hours (hard edits obviously but still...). I didn't know how you selected the competitor or the Iron Chefs, but it seems like there isn't too much of a pool of talent to choose from, given that some of the people who are skilled at making AMV's was involved in the competition's setup and unable to participate. Not only was i happy with how it turned out, i thought to myself, how on earth are they going to keep the average person's attention for 3 hours watching a few people edit video for 3 hours? This is clearly something that isn't fun to watch!

Overall i'd say you get a B+, then i realized you had only 2 weeks, and so i'm going to change that to an A-, that projector thing was pretty brutal...something you should have known how to fix.

Some things that left me awestruck at the event...
-Being able to judge, render and PRESENT the Winner and runner-up at the halftime in masquerade was nothing short of jaw-dropping. This was HIGHLY received by the audience, you may not be there, but this was widely cheered.
-The competitors, after watching their final products, i was simply in awe at how well they managed to do what they did. --The Secret ingredient, complete win here. It would be awesome if it was on par technically with the other videos, because its too obvious when the video was from the secret ingredient. and i will say thank god you didn't do a live-action secret ingredient, this would ruin the ambiance of an AMV as far as i am concerned (again i may be the minority)
-Having Q&A and not just show AMV after AMV after AMV. If i wanted to watch AMV's i wouldn't go to a Con (except for the contest) i'd browse the internet from home. So i was (one of the only ones) that DIDNT want any AMV's shown. i'll touch on this later..
-The Turnout, was happy to see so many people who were so involved with AMV's fielding questions and not getting angry at some of the stupid questions asked (multiple times) like "what video editor should i use" or "which is better, X or Y." You guys put on a great show.

Improvement
Clearly this is an area you already know what needs to be improved on in terms of technical issues, so i won't talk about having a good projector or better rigs or anything like that because you already know these things, so what im going to comment on are what i think should change in terms of how the event works.

First off, keep the Q&A, maybe cut it down to 45 min or 30, but please do not get rid of this.
Would it be possible to up the number of entrants, this is a competition, and only having 2 people is kinda, well, gimped. If you could have another time, before the contest if you could have a cast calling (day 1) to use the footage from last years contest and have them tryout to compete in the main event, select 2, and have 4-5 competitors (the same that you did this year, and have the two newcomers elect on who they want to compete with as well, have three winners, one for each group and 1 for best of show.
Have creators, and other iron chefs discuss what had to go on in various AMV's they created, both technically and creatively, why they chose the clips they did, what they did and didn't like about other AMV's etc.
Giveaways, how you can make any of this AMV related is beyond me, but everyone loves free swag, maybe some Org banded merch, i hear good lanyards were missed this year :-p
Having the panel at another point in the day, preferably end before a main event starts. This would also give the judges time to judge (hopefully multiple entrants)
Maybe talk about history of what got some of the creators into AMV's and show their first AMV's. Maybe show winners of other IC from other Cons.

I'm sure i missed a lot of things with this post, but i think i got the better part of want i wanted to be said to be heard. Hope to hear from you soon enough if you want to talk more about it I'm always willing to, just shoot me a PM or an AIM (SSJRapter)
