I'll be honest, every hour or so I kept looking back behind to see if people were still there. To my surprise hardly anyone left the panel, it was real surprising. In a way, this looked like a extended AMV 101 (102?) panel but with an actual competition as the main presentation. I only noticed people leaving after the completed AMVs were shown. Numbers speak for themselves really and this even put's other panels to shame in terms of actual interest. And that's pretty great considering it's all last minute.

Aside from the obvious technical issues, I enjoyed it. You know what you guys could do now that I thought of it. Have a extended panel in the Iron Chef so you can answer people's questions more thoroughly with a nice visual explanation, like using your PCs/Macs.

Something I forgot to mention in my last post that you might consider for next year: having the judges critique the videos before the winner is announced almost spells out who's going to win (or it did this time anyway). If the explanation followed the victory announcement, the suspense might last longer.

As for prizes, if you aren't able to get a sponsor for some reason, have someone hit up a dollar store and grab a bunch of awesomecore toys, like sticker books and bubble wands. That's what Dr. Dinosaur and I did for our amv showing at Anime North (also a first time event), and the crowd loved it!

Lets see one suggestion for next year. The judges, while yes its good to have the iron editors judge I do remember AWA having some of the industry or guests as judges also. Now not saying that was feasible this year but next year assuming there isn't some weird legal issue that comes up, one industry (someone who produces/makes anime or one of the staff) one Celebrity(VA/artist) and of course one amv editor this will diversify the judging. Kind of like how there's mutable favorite categories for the AMV contest.

Oh, yeah. I remember the second year of Iron Chef at AWA, when Dave from ADVision emphatically announced to all the attendees that speaking as an anime distributor, he loved AMV's. Should we get a representative from another company next year, I wonder what they would say.

Kinda random comment but the two funniest moments for me from the IC was:

1. The Guy who asked about what would happen if you used an Anime about the DIVX logo :asd:

2. The crowd fucking up during "Senpai says". I got flashbacks to the Cab Calloway concert scene from the Blues Brothers.

Wouldn't that make the critique afterwards pointless then? I know on Iron Chef that they critique it before they decide the winner. These are AMVs but I'm just throwing this out. |:>

I don't see how. Really, I wouldn't mind if there weren't critiques at all (especially in this case, where all three gave very similar reasons). However, if the judges explained their choice after selecting a winner, the audience gets a feel for what makes a "choice cut" without knowing who won before the judges "deliberate".
