Anime about manga....

Postby Inkwolf » Sat Jun 19, 2010 8:44 pm

I really enjoy anime series about manga artists and drawing manga.

I have already seen School Rumble, Dojin Work, Comic Party, and Genshiken. Can anyone recommend any others? (I am also sort of interested in any series about drawing for anime, though don't bother mentioning Animation Runner Kuromi or Paranoia Agent.)

Anyway, I used to draw comics when I was younger, so these things strike a chord with me. I only wish there was something like Japan's doujinshi conventions in the US for amateur cartoonists. Would love to hear about more series, or to discuss them!

Bakuman is a manga about manga (and anime, a bit.) Prolly not what you're looking for, but it's pretty good.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about that. It's supposedly airing this fall. No exact dates yet though :/

That sounds like exciting news! :) I'm not actually much of a manga reader (except for when I've already seen the anime version), but I may check that one out, if I can get it from the library. (Or I may just wait till the anime is available!)

And I'll have a look for that episode of Golden Boy, too--thanks!

If anyone wants to know about the series I listed before:

Dojin Work is about a girl who discovers that her friend makes porno doujinshi, and gets the idea that she will become rich if she does the same. Pretty funny in spots, though I'd advise watching it online, as the DVDs are WAY overpriced for what you get. (There's 12 episodes, but they re only about 10 minutes each.)

Comic Party is about a boy with drawing talent, who is dragged into the whole comic-drawing and doujinshi-convention scene. It's a sort of learn-how-to-do-it anime. The sequel, Comic Party Revolution, picks up when they are in college, and almost totally ignores the comic-drawing angle in favor of harem-ish plots.

Genshiken is about a college club for the appreciation of manga, anime and videogames. The members are hard-core otaku. It's only in the second season (Genshiken 2) that they actually decide to work on a doujinshi manga, but season 1 (and the three OVA episodes available on Kujibiki Unbalance discs) are pretty funny on their own, if slow-paced for some audiences.

School Rumble is a classic high school comedy. Harima, the male lead, takes to drawing manga to relieve his feelings of unrequited love. Lots of funny stuff and plot points about it.

In REC you got a Seiyuu (female Voice Actor) thus the title Rec.
