EDIT: Heres a good example. At my job, I take calls for Verizon Wireless customer service. 1/5 customers that call in know what the "#" sign is. Most have to double check and ask if it's "the weird looking H on my number pad"

That's a keeper. You should come work at a grocery store and see our shining examples of humanity's hope. Some of my favorites:

-Lady comes over to me and askes me which cheese is the kind that melts in the microwave.

-Guy wants to know if we still have Christmas Cookie Dough. In mid-June.

- Not so much the guy's fault, but a funny little foreign guy came into the store. He wanted some Windex, but everytime he said it, it came out sounding like "Swan Dicks".

-Anyway Back on Topic-

Just glad we got through this mess in one piece. Regarding the contest at the Nokia (since I've never been), how long is the pre-show planning on being? Will a list of the AMVs used be produced before or after the event? And is Michael going to MC again like last year?

Next year, we'll have nothing short of a civil rights movement.

In regards to the subtitles, logos, and credits we do that for ACen. I think there were only 4 DQs due to fansub subtitles this year. In general I made all the rules a lot more specific and restrictive to better guide entrants, improve contest quality, and make judging more manageable. There is always the drawback of making the rules more restrictive that you will lose some entrants because they did not wish to conform to them or something was beyond their expertise. I would say the justification is if you can still put on a good show you haven't gone too overboard but that's just my opinion.

Michael has a very inclusive mindset when he weighs whether a vid of a particular "quality" is allowable. The man has a heart of gold and wants new, inexperienced creators to have their fair chance. That's very admirable. Unfortunately that means 30hr judging sessions and the need to have a cheese grater nearby for my eyes. 8-)

Sometimes the best way to learn is through failure. Permitting mediocre quality only encourages it to continue. Taking a harder stance by failing a deficient entry will teach them that quality matters, and encourage them to rise to the challenge in the future.

But Michael is right, I am way too strict. Realistically, I'd be happy if I simply never saw unforgivables like divx logos, subtitles, or messed up aspect ratios in a submitted vid ever again. The rest is what the tech score is for. :)

just my two cents, but i favor subject matter and heart over pixel problems. i'm not saying that as a judge but more as a member of the audience trying to enjoy a good show. i've always felt that way tho, some people just don't have the ability (or access) to produce HQ videos, but certainly know how to edit and tell a story with video and music. that's just me.

Do you remember the "internet is for porn" amv?
great AMV, despite the crazy aspect ratio (making people stretched beyond all compare) the video still turned out to be a great success. great example of the 'heart over pixel problems".

though i know there are people who say that if you can't even get 'those technical parts' right, you've already done a bad job. while that stance maybe a little extreme, i do have to agree, just a SMALL amount of additional effort can fix those issues. >_<
