Considering how spread out my finished videos have been, it's hard for me to specify an ideal environment to edit in.

What I do know is that I prefer nights where I have nothing else to take care of around the house. I have to be alone and not bothered. One thing I know helps me along is positive feedback from my past videos. I do look back and read comments on my videos from people who liked them, and it encourages me to keep editing. I also have to work with sources that I truly love, or have a sincere appreciation for. Above everything else, I know I absolutely have to be fully rested and in a very positive and stress-free mood to edit.

That's about all I can tell as far as an environment for editing is concerned.

I just need it to be cold (or at least not hot), I can not edit when it's hot. Don't ask me why but it's just like a complete mental block whenever I edit in the heat.

Best place is on my couch with my laptop on it's cooling pad, doesn't matter the time of day but I rather it be cool. Have a 2 gallon of hawaiian punch or water by side with my dog and cats in the same room and my bathroom in the next room. If I'm having a convo online with my fam, friends, or girl I feel more relaxed and amped while editing since I know I'll get to show them my work when I'm done. I'll have my earphones in while arranging clips on the timeline. If I see myself spending some time finding clips and cutting them and not doing any arranging at all on the song I'm editing with I'll turn on my big screen and play either instrumentals or r&b music thru cds on my PS3 thru the speakers on blast, sometime I'll set the channel on XM Radio's r&b channel. If I know I have to go to work or class on a day I will not edit before I go to them but I will when I come back, now while I'm at my job on breaks sometime I'll edit since I get three 35 minute breaks on 3rd shift and there's hardly anyone there to talk to.

Must haves: glass of water, separate cup of coffee or tea. Generally I edit without headphones, I prefer turing up the speakers, the extra bit of loudness sortof wakes me up/gets me ready. Might listen to a few really good songs like this before I start, or watch a vid or two. Then...

1.) Check to see if anyone is playing MW2
2.) Check again to make sure
3.) Nobody is ;_;
4.) Open project and stare at it
5.) Resist the urge to turn on the TV
6.) Resist the urge to launch MW2
7.) Resist the urge to check IRC
8.) Get on skype and waste half the day
9.) Finally look at project again, start making a few cuts
10.) Stay up all night and create epic sheit
11.) Repeat

something like that.

(have to add though, when other people are on skype editing, I feel like editing, so this is usualy way more productive.)

I NEED to have everything clean before I edit. My apartment is typically a pigsty, but before I can crack down and edit I have to make everything sparkle. I enjoy watching some of my favorite amvs to get in the mood, get ideas, and/or plagiarize.

I have trouble motivating myself when I'm at home. Too many distractions, and I've not been able to make a physically or psychologically separate place for serious activities. Consequently, I do most of my editing on breaks/lunch at work. Strangely enough, my best progress seems to get made on the shorter breaks, whether or not I've been thinking about it beforehand. It helps to have something to ignore, I find. The trick is actually ignoring it.

Night time, iced tea, and a free evening. I do most of my clipping for vids while relaxing at a coffee shop.

I recently discovered candlelight and burning Nag Champa incense works pretty well for me. O:

Jes, if I could edit videos outside of my home, believe me. I would have a ton more videos done |:

Mmm... these days it's generally with the speakers on and not headphones... my pair broke and I haven't had the motivation to replace them since. Water bottle on hand is always necessary and something to munch on. Time of day is not really relevant but I do crank up the volume more during the daylight hours.

-It's night
-My headphones are next to me (they are not closed ones, because of the comfort and it's quite anyway)
-One of my laptops is conencted to my 26" full HD monitor via HDMI
-TV playing in the background like a radio. I turn it of if I need faster results or need to concentrate more
-some snacks or sweets are fine, but not needed

What's really important to me is the program: Premiere Pro and only Premiere Pro. I really can't imagine to edit a full AMV in Avid and Final Cut Pro defines uncomfortablty to me. This "test" version of FCP 7 is so buggy! Can you imagine to press an hotkey and it doesn't work? That's a common FCP issue and is uncomfortable as hell. The whole handling often wants to band my head on the desk. It really sucks out the fun for me.

@Kionon: Sure you can do great things with FCP really fast, but when I have the choice than I definatly stick to Premiere Pro. In my eyes it has almost the same functions and for sure all I need for amvs.

Oh! And for After Effects compositing when I don't need sound, I listen to music. Makes the whole working sexy =3

To all you couch editors:
Are you using your trackpad of your laptop? I can imagine to edit a video with my good built in trackpad on my Macbook, but seriously don't want to do same on most Windows machines that I had and worked with. It's quite uncomfortable for me. I also need to make the raw editing with my mouse. I'm not a keyboard only editor.
