Contrived episode 10... LOLZ. Talk about zero emotional impact.

The funniest thing about this show is the first character to disappear was the most emotionally well directed and meaningful. That's not a good thing when said character was minimally developed and the audience has minimal attachment to character. We're now quite a few more episodes in and that character still stands out as better developed than the recent ones.

I was going to mention this earlier but there's a lot of VN roots in some of the characterization and story. That makes sense because Maeda is writing it but I think they went back to well too many times. Even the "let's save them" angle was reminding me somewhat of Tanaka Romeo's Cross Channel. I think the brevity of the series is a wall for Maeda. Definitely a constraint he's probably not used to. As a VN writer he has certainly been slow to do things and his scenarios ballooned in later works (see Clannad). The problem here is now he has a constraint but instead of picking something to focus on he's all over the place. As is often the case in the anime industry some of this could very be coming from producers needs to have certain desirable elements in the show.

Angel Beats is totally a bad anime, but that's not the point. It's a bad anime that knows it's a bad anime, and manages to keep its foibles, contrivances and silliness entertaining, at least for me. There's relatively little pretension about it, and it just does what it needs to do, while also passing off a few cool ideas and characters here and there. It's not trying very hard, but it's still keeping things fresh for me, and I know it's not gonna go on long enough to really kill off any sense of freshness it may have. I'll take Angel Beats any day over many other anime that are bad in much the same way, but pretend not to know it and try to pass off as some sort of masterpiece.

tl;dr version: if you're watching Angel Beats expecting it to be good, you're doing it wrong :nose:

And yes, brotonashi :manlytears:
Spoiler :
I'm gonna miss Yui. I really wouldn't say this had no emotional impact, even if it was really contrived. She was a fun character that I'll miss. That is all ;__;

So yeah, I think that's one of the things that keeps me enjoying this show. The "revelations" are a bit overblown and contrived, but they STILL caught me off guard. This generates "OH FUCK WHAT" moments. By this formula, Angel Beats is better than Avatar. :>

Spoiler :
I was wondering about Guild. Nothing else was said of them after that one ep. I also wondered WHY all those people would want to (or were forced to?) stay down there, living in caves, slaving away so the SSS would have munitions. They couldn't be THAT scared of Kanade? Or was it just their way of coping? But there seem to be more people in Guild than in the SSS aboveground. My impression was that around 100 or so lived down there, and that the SSS is only like 30-40 people. So I'll venture a guess that Guild is tired of Yurippe's shit, and are trying to force their own resolution and take the SSS down at the same time. I mean, sortof obvious, but I've been wrong a lot so far too D:

Just finished getting caught up. I thought episode 10 was rather enjoyable,
Spoiler :
even if the relationship was slightly forced (I mean yes, they interacted with one another, but this interaction was for comedy relief. Suddenly it actually meant something?) I loved 10's endng montage with Yui and Hinata, though.

Episode 11 was all kind of crazy.
Spoiler :
Firstly, shadows? Well they've yet to explain them officially: God's minions to make people NPC's or else? Pretty much. So buff glasses man gets devoured by one of these guys and becomes an NPC. Yurippe's plan: let Otonashi tell everyone his old plan. Avoid shaodws at all costs. Don't get eaten.

There was no (and I can't emphasize this more), NO emotional feelings from ANYONE for buff glasses man's predicament. I mean sure they can't exactly bring him back to his normal self because they don't know how, but that doesn't mean that you can merely shrug it off and move on with your plan. At least have a moment of shock, for pete's sake.

I think this show would've been better if it was longer: I have a feeling the final 2 episodes won't be structured well.
Spoiler :
Also, hoho so Angel is just another human, eh. So Key decides to pull a fast one and state a fact that NO ONE IN THE AUDIENCE questioned. So now we have a whole new line of confusion: if she's normal, than why does she have these crazy powers? Their explanation: Because she has a purpose.

I seriously hope they explain that more, or else I'm going to be really ticked off for the next few episodes.

Spoiler :
Angel did say she wasn't an angel in the first ep. Her powers, just like the shadows, are computer programmed (or so I assume), so I'm guessing if you are able to obtain a computer, you can gain powers. I'm guessing the vice president's hypnosis is also from a computer program. How you obtain one, besides stealing from the lab, I guess is the question. But then again, they are president and vice president of the school so they may have gotten theirs as part of the job. Or something.

I was one of the 'hates Angel Beats because of the graphical glitches in ep 01' crowd sad to say. After all these eps, it's no Haruhi, but it hasn't been a mess either.

It's not my number 1 choice of 2010 though.
