Here's another blast from the past
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=68
I must say I find it pretty amusing that there are maybe 4 or 5 people total that posted in that thread that still come around here today. I say amusing and not surprising because it's certainly expected if only from a "this is how online communities go" aspect. I was obviously around during all of this stuff and I've seen my fair share of people come and go. I guess I've just never understood the whole "declared leaving" thing. You don't see it as much anymore, but the whole idea of openly declaring "I am done with this internet site and all it stands for and I will have nothing to do with it." just doesn't jive with me. If you have a problem with the site or are tired of the hobby or whatever, just stop visiting that site or doing that hobby. *shrug*

I'd say I'm in it for the long haul, except I took such a long hiatus from my last project that I think I forgot how to edit

The only time I wish people would tell us they'll be leaving is when they are the active maintainer of something; guides, stickies, faqs, etc. Especially if you have information placed elsewhere. Take some time turnover to someone else, so the community doesn't lose that information. Otherwise, I am with Brad.

Maybe if your social life consumes you 24/7 and you were at one point a very active user, announcing your retirement seems appropriate. But majority of the time its "People hate my videos now, I quit."

@outlawed re: fansub groups: I think that's more about people getting sick of doing things for years and only ever being yelled at for not producing more episodes faster than any downturn in anime. Hell, how many cons keep seeing record attendance numbers year after year?

I don't think we have that aspect here. I've never seen the hundreds upon hundreds of forum posts about people demanding popular editor X make a new video right the fuck now.

Going to post this because I think what I wanted people to take as an amusing footnote from the old threads might be overlooked by some. To clarify my post was basically about the general comments of lack of new members.

In summary this website no longer represents the online AMV community and will never do so again. The site grew a community around itself, it developed, and the result is where we are now. I don't consider EK or Joe C as ever part of this site's community by the final definition of what we now would consider the org's online community. In fact neither am I. There is a certain generation of AMVers that are still around and some are more active than others. It is that group which ultimately became the core of this site at its peak maturation point and are to this day what defines it. The beginning years were quite different I'm sure folks would agree.

1) The online AMV community was once a small group predominantly represented on the AMV ML.
2) The online AMV community was once a larger group predominantly represented on animemusicvideos.org
3) The online AMV community was once an even larger group predominantly represented on animemusicvideos.org, studio websites, and other international websites like amvnews.
4) The online AMV community is no longer predominantly represented at any major portal. There are now simply separate communities.

I think people shouldn't worry so much about an overall need to get new blood in. Instead I would concentrate on enjoying what you have created while at the same time being open to new people. I don't think a concerted effort where you go out of your way to advertise or attract people from other places to this site is ever going to work. The org's lexicon has already been defined and if you try to force some type of community merger or intake it's just going to destroy what you have built without a net gain.

I will assimilate all of the amv community into my own being.

Then I will poop it out.

Dan, I am not sure I follow your historical references. I can't honestly say anything about EK or Joe C. EK and I have been friends for years, and have three connections, so I saw quite a bit of her outside of AMVs (she used to work the next desk over from my best friend, I've known Brett for years, and I know EK through AMVs, all in all, a lot of contact would probably have been had, even if neither one of us had anything to do with AMVs). I can talk to studio sites, nabiki irc, and the AMV ML. And I can talk about the early days of the org. But I am told the org hit its peak maturity in 2003-2004, years I was pretty much AWOL. Yet even if we acknowledge that, there is no denying I am part of the make up of the org. So I am left asking how this "parcours historique" is relevant... I guess, despite your clarification, I don't understand the point you are trying to make (or why you do not consider yourself part of the community. I certainly would say you are).

While I concur that there is never going to be a focal point anime music video production in general, I am still convinced that there is no better place for quality anime music video production that doggedly holds on to principles of ethics and technical aspects. Without the Org, AMVs would be largely unwatchable. Would there be excellent AMVs? Of course, but it would be much harder to find them. International sites can be helpful, but I have repeatedly stated that I do not mind discussion in languages other than English in addition to English. Any reputation that the Org is English-only or North American only needs to be put to bed, and quickly. The Org is still the go-to place for the best in AMVs, although we will lose out to AMVNews and we'll all have to learn Russian if we don't innovate.

I also am not entirely sure I agree with your conclusion, based on how I keep hearing that eventually, if trends continue, we will not have the funds to maintain the site as is. We get new people by the bucketload- they just either only download (use our bandwidth) or download and upload (use our bandwidth) but do not use the forums, do not comment, do not donate. When we had even more people joining, we actually did better, because storage was cheap enough that the higher percentage of donations actually allowed us to deal with the high numbers of non-participants using the system. If we consistently lose more and more members, eventually we will get to a point where those on the forums simply are unable, not even unwilling, but unable to support the entire LOCAL system. And the org will collapse.

We must stimulate growth, but more importantly, we must stimulate useful growth that leads to donation and forum participation.

Otherwise we might as well just say fuck it and leave now.

Fix'd. It is much more fitting for you speak about yourself in the third person. :jester:
