More site runned activities and getting more active users

Postby MycathatesyouAMV » Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:56 pm

I was just thinking that the org has alot of potential to get more involved in amvs and get more active users. Right now the activity is pretty low and it just seems like people just mostly come to upload their amvs and thats that. The org is a good site and all and the best site for amvs out there, but what about online contests hosted by a-m-v.org ? The contests are all for conventions pretty much and I just think it would be nice to have an online only one. There is the online iron chef tourneys, but those are only like uh once per two years ? Having many online contests would easily promote more activity and people would have more fun things to do. The org could have the contests based on certain themes even sometimes. I think the main page could have alot more info and stats on the amv scores and leaderboards. A featured amv on the home page would be a good idea also. Basically over all I just think this site could get more involved in amvs themselves and get creative with it. As for advertising, I think we could have more options toget the site advertised than just site banners. Getting this site well known at anime conventions would be a perfect idea and be easy to do. There may be ways this site does advertise that I do not know about though. Also I think the site layout and theme really needs redone. It is very boring and flat to me, especially considering its an amv community which is suppost to be creative. If the site is more fun to visit and move around it should increase the amount of members. I think a dark colored background would fit this site alot more, and some very artsy techy stuff. Overall what Im trying to say is just to get the Org to go to its full potential, make the amv community more fun, and get the site more known.

the site hosts an online contest called the viewer's choice awards every year. also, there are workshops and meetings at some anime conventions that promote the website.

i agree the site design could undergo further revision, we will need to be patient with the programming department though.

also, there are many contests and other activities (like amv reviews podcasts and chats) run by community members. the community members outnumber the site administration, so it is great to see community-run activities.

That's the point of the site |:

You know, it might help some if these non-officially org sanctioned things ended up on the front page more. Which, admittedly, is just as much the fault of people not asking as anything since the one time I asked for admin assistance to publicize something (JCA the year I ran it) the admins were happy to help.

Okay, I read through that.

Here's what I feel:

Much of what you are suggesting is already being done. The issue is that, in large part, the org does not represent current trends in social media. Nor are we likely to be willing to do so. Indeed, due to our resistance to become like other social media sites (facebook, YouTube, Veoh), we drove off large numbers of impressionable new users. They took this to mean that we disliked them, instead of merely disliking the medium of instant exchange and gratification they were used to. This "opinion" of the "elitism" of the org in turn spread, and now the org is dying.

I think featured videos are fine. However, I very much disagree with your ideas on the site design. The site should be foremost easily read and easily navigable. The org is primarily a database. The forums represent the social aspect of the site. I personally would be against twitter feeds, facebook status updates, comments directly on video entries, and the like, but each of those would probably not make me leave. I would pretty much bitch just like I already do.

As for advertising, the fear of 1) lawyers and 2) massive barbarian hordes invading Rome are the reasons we did not advertise in the first place. I am not sure if the landscape had changed enough to make it now feasible to advertise. But if we did, where would we advertise?

I also point out that a number of members, including myself, have generated content. The VCAs, JCAs, #AMV-Review, This Week In AMVs, and various stickies and guides, just to name some of the content created. What content can you create and will commit to continuing?

I still think word of mouth is the best way to grow membership that is active AND committed to our standards, both technical and ethical.

Which reminds me, I should get back to work on the next TWIAMVs now that I've got some free time again. And maybe see about that front page thing too...

Wasn't the original intent behind the banner contest to create banners specifically for advertising this site?
