Importer Process Server error

Greetings, Gods of Premiere!

I'm running Premiere Pro CS4 and I'm building a video for a guy from the footage he took at MAGFest this year. (yes, this video is not related to AMV's. If that's somehow against the rules, I apologize but if it's worth anything to you guys I've been watching AMV's since 2001 and I live with a former AMV creator) My credentials aside, I know this community is a sizeable knowledge base for Premiere, so I'm hoping I can get some help.

I'm running into an error during preview playback and MOST IMPORTANTLY this error occurs during export which crashes the process. It's an ImporterProcessServer.exe error which you can see below: (I'm assuming the forum resizes images it deems to be too big)

I've done a little Google searching and I've come across suggestions that it might be codec related. I had the CCCP installed when installing Premiere. I tried uninstalling the CCCP and exporting. This slowed down the frequency of the errors but ultimately did not fix the problem. I did a little more searching and found some advice that FFDShow might help if installed. I installed FFDShow, but it didn't fix the problem. I got CodecSniper to look at my system's codecs. Since deleting the wrong codec could cause system malfunction, I haven't messed with it beyond looking.

Now, I could be way off base with the codec thing, or it may be only part of the problem, or I may not have fully understood the advice I got. It could be that my computer is six years old...

The footage I'm using is converted from the guy's camera format which was .MOD (never heard of .MOD) I obtained a video converter and converted the .MOD's to .MPG's (Converting to AVI caused multiple instances of codec processes to open on my taskbar, two for each clip. There are hundreds of video clips... So this was not feasible)

All audio is in MP3 format

I've run a DXdiag.exe for my system so you can see some of the specs of my machine. They're under the spoiler.

Speaking for myself and the guy I'm working for, I'm eagerly looking forward to any advice you guys can give.

MPG wasn't the happiest of the choices. AVI was indeed the route, but you got the wrong codec. If my guess is correct, you probably compressed the AVIs to XVID or DIVX or DX50, and the icons you were getting were FFDShow's. You should have instead compressed them to some lossless codec like Lagarith or Huffyuv. They would have weighted a lot, but editing and exporting would be smooth.
As for the audio MP3 is supported, but it's still probably a better idea to use lossless audio like WAV when editing, at least for quality reasons, I guess.
CCCP was not the issue, as that is just a package of FFDShow+Haali Splitter with everything properly set for playback.
If you have enough HDD space you could convert those videos to Lagarith and then you can change the clips in the project panel so you won't need to redo any editing.
Another suggestion: since Adobe Media Encoder is its own application, you won't need to have premiere open at the same time. Once you're done with your editing, save your project and close premiere, and make sure to kill any adobe process still in the background. Then open AME and chose File > Add Premiere Pro Sequence. Pick your project from the list on the left, wait a bit for the sequences to show, and then chose the sequence you need to export. After that, save the video as Lagarith again, and then compress to a lossy format of your need afterwards. There's nothing wrong with keeping premiere open while exporting, but since it does suck quite a few resources, having just AME running is probably for the best.

If the export collapsed over nothing specific (like, let's say, choosing codecs or starting encode), then I would look over mirk suggestion about closing Adobe's Premiere process. While I believe that the introduction of Media Encoder was good, it wasn't well implemented (IMO) because it loads the clips twice in memory when exporting with Adobe Premiere open. You can do 2 things, either reboot and open from media encoder, and export, or open from Adobe Premiere, open task manager, processes and then killing every thing that has premiere or import process server (I believe it was called like that, but it can also be part of media encoder, so gotta be careful on that). Or try killing obviously memory bloated processes that look like adobe ones.

Hello again. I apologize for being so late with a reply.

I've been crunching the problem since I last posted. Thanks a lot for the help you've both given me.

I tried everything you both told me and none of it worked. But after toying around a lot more I've found that the problem is with my source footage. The clips I received were corrupted before I got them, but in such a way that only Premiere had an issue with it. The clips produce the Importer Process Server error at consistent points during playback of a clip. (i.e. a clip will always fail at timecode 1:18:02) So the problem was not memory after all. I feel kinda dumb for not noticing it before.
