Where can I buy japanese DVDs?

Postby Edward♥Alphonse » Thu Apr 08, 2010 7:30 am

Hey, I'm new in the "AMV business" and have a question :)

I'm from Germany and would like to make a Multi-Anime AMV. The problem is that most of the animes I'd like to use aren't published in Germany yet, for example Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: The first volume is now out in Japan on Blue Ray.
So my question is: Where can I buy the DVD now? Do I have to ship it from Japan? Are there any online shops where I can get it easier?

Maybe this question is stupid but at least I don't download the episodes illegally! :)

Thanks for any answers

CDJapan is a good place. Another alternative is the Japanese Amazon. As a last resort you might want to try ebay or alikes, but I wouldn't particularly suggest those, although you might be able to find nice deals.
However be warned, Japanese DVDs and Blu-rays have insane prices. As for FMA Brotherhood, I don't seem to find it on CDJapan, but amazon does have it. You're like that there's an almost 50% discount so it's about 22 euros + shipping expenses. Keep in mind that it does only have the first 2 episodes, though. It can be considered cheap, since quite a few japanese blu-rays cost 80 euros for 3 eps...

Yeah, I'd stay away from ebay. There are a TON of HK's on there. Which might be fine for you, maybe not. I generally do not want unless it's impossible to find it any other way.

If the Japanese prices are too high, you could always order the North American releases (if those are indeed available). They also tend to be cheaper at retail (with more eps per disc), although I don't know about shipping costs from the U.S. to Europe.

For instance, the first Blu-ray set of FMA Brotherhood is slated for release at the end of May. If my math is right, it has 13 episodes and costs ~30 EUR, which is probably far cheaper than getting the Japanese discs, even with shipping tacked on.

Thanks for all the replies, guys!

Well... I guess it's expensive but is there an alternative? I mean, don't you buy the DVDs as well to create an AMV?

Sorry for the double-post, I don't know how to edit replies

Thank you very much!! This is great! I didn't know that there's already an English dub of FMA brotherhood out.

Hm... maybe I'll wait for the animes to be released with English dub, that might be cheaper and I can watch them in my free-time with english sub, too ^_^

Serious fans always BUY the anime, people that don't give a damn, just want the file and don't care how they get it, download them. Yes that's also called theft for the most part.

Germany being in the middle, you can likely get just as far with dealing with Amazon from the North American market.

There's also a site called Rightstuff that everyone seems to like to buy from.

Well, japanese DVDs and Blu-rays tend to have better quality too, though. I mean, fitting 2 eps in a disc and fitting 6 could make the american release a bit bitrate starved, at least compared to the japanese one. Although it's bluray we're talking about, 50 GB might suffice just fine for 6 eps at 1080p.

Japanese discs also have a tendency, at least with those 2-ep ones, to only be single-layer. 3-ep Japanese discs or all the American ones I remember using (with anywhere from 3 to 6 eps) have been dual-layers. I'd expect the situation is largely the same for Blu-ray, where the 2-ep Japanese discs are 25GB single-layers, and the American ones tend to be 50GB dual-layers.

It is still true the Japanese discs tend to have higher bitrates for the video (they also often use PCM for stereo tracks instead of AC3, which I think is something of a waste, but whatever), not to mention better masters to work from, but they also have less breathing room. It's not like they're sticking 9800kbps MPEG-2s on dual-layers (and heck, if it was 9800kbps MPEG-2 and 192kbps AC3, they could still fit two 25-min. eps on a single-layer disc, with about 500 MBs to spare).

I totally agree, that's why I'm asking...

That's an awesome site! Thank you! :)

I know that but I really have to be realistic with my amount of money. Furthermore do I want to watch them on my TV too besides of making AMVs and that's difficult if you don't speak japanese  A DVD with raws and english sub is perfect for me and I'll sure be fine with the quality :)
