click for the direct exe file.

I use this for all my converting, the only trouble I have with it is converting MP4's to AVI's and WMV's etc. but for everything else, it's #1 imo.

you're better off installing the codecs to your machine for MP4's. I has links to those but you'll have to pay me for them. :ying:

or, you could use avisynth...

Haven't used SUPER myself (which is what the link is to, for those weary of clicking links to .exe files), but some members have reported bad quality output

well honestly, I'm weary about avisynth myself. and that's true, but it really depends on the encoders/codecs you have installed.
and even if I do get a bad output, I use Chroma Blur on SV9 to help reduce the noise and what not.

how well DOES avisynth work? is it buggy?

Avisynth won't compress the files but you can use it coupled with virtualdub to change most filetypes to AVI losslessly. It's probably a longer and more difficult process but it'll give you those avi's without losing any quality.
Try the amvapp, it contains various programs and plugins that are handy for video conversions.

Super sucks. Really, it breaks things when you install it. Avisynth doesnt break things, so avisynth doesnt suck.

breaks things? maybe you just didn't install it properly, it's a big app so maybe your machine isn't fast enough to run it well.
my laptop's close to new and it still gives me problems when running, imagine a dated machine. *shrugs* whatever floats your boat.

SUPER uses lots of broken experimental things and shouldn't be used ever. It uses old ffmpeg and mencoder and has some funky bugs that nobody cares about. Just stick to avisynth+x264/lagarith for pretty much everything.

HollyFlower91, you are wrong.

Zarxrax is responsible for one of the most commonly used encoder GUIs used in anime video editing production today.

I suggest you spend significantly more time reading the forums before you start acting like a douchebag.

How long did you have to spend reading the forums before you started acting like one? Was it under 5 years? over? I'd like to know.

Wow, I walked into that one.

My point is that you come in here, and tell established editors about a program we already know about and that has been discussed repeatedly elsewhere. Then, when this is pointed out to you, you have the audacity to question the technical abilities or hardware possession of those same editors.

A simple search would have brought up the other conversations about SUPER, and a bit more lurking in this exact same subforum would have shown Zarxrax's contributions to this community.

If you act like an ignorant yet arrogant newbie, be prepared to be treated like one. I'm a nice guy, in general, and I like helping people, but the way you treated a pillar of this community pisses me off, and you deserved to be called on it.

Actually seems like people like handbrake alot more than super, I've heard very good things about it, though I have not used it myself. (I wrote my own little app for the jobs I need to get done) but I did try super a while back, and frankly, couldn't get it to work properly, hence, among other failed apps, one of the reasons for my own app being born.

And yea, though I think Konion might be overreacting a bit to your obvious lack of knowledge concerning Zarx's technical abilites/equipment, He (Zarx) does know what hes talking about. Hes the one maintaining AMVApp right now afterall.

Handbrake and SUPER both suck. On the side, maintaining AMVApp doesn't make you know what you're doing, it makes you slightly more knowledgeable than the people using it. It still does some silly things.

I've done comparison testing with handbrake, and I would recommend against it for prepping footage. On Mac at least, Avidemux is a much better option. It is hard to effectively detelecine and not end up with ghosting with handbrake. See my Top of the Rain Revisited video, which used handbrake footage. Handbrake also pretty much ate itself when I tried to get it to work on Macross: Do You Remember Love. If you do not have access to Avisynth because of a PPC processor, I recommend Avidemux and no other.

As for my attitude, I wasn't just reacting to the posts above, but also posts elsewhere. I have this reputation for being a real elitist whenever a newbie shows up, and I think posts like my above are used to justify that view. However, it's a case of context. This is not the only thread where I feel that HollyFlower91 offered questionable advice with an air of authority, and it is not the only thread where s/he has dismissed editors that a simple day of lurking would have shown to be integral parts of the community.

Posts like the above come only when someone has really made themselves unpopular with me, and are the tiny minority of my posts in regards to new editors. My reputation, such as it is, is almost entirely undeserved. Most of my posts are helpful, and are the reason I wrote as many stickies and guides as I have. I am not anti-newbie, and I welcome new blood into the community. Just don't walk in like you own the place, take some time to learn the standards, both technical and ethical, of the community.

And I will be happy to help you. :D
