What Type of AMV Editor are you?

Postby Midnyte » Tue Mar 23, 2010 10:29 pm

How many type are there? In my general thinking I say 2 primary types: The Storyboarder, and the Chaos Engine.

Everyone knows, Storyboarder: That editor that takes weeks/months planning every sequence to the music, rewatching possibly 100s of hours of anime to get it just right on paper, and then sets about assemby.

The Chaos Engine: The editor that has already seen every episode 100+ times and has a general idea what they want the video to look like, and set about assembling their video without the thought of writing it down. Selecting sceens on the fly as they scrub through the source.

Needless to say, they both can produce very good videos, and the opposite.

Me? Chaos Engine with a hint of Storyboarder. Is it an engineer trait?

I would say chaos engine, but I haven't seen most of the anime that I edit with.

I'm a storyboarder-chaos engine hybrid. Most the times I do love to plan out every little detail of my amv, usually when I'm in the zone and more serious.
But other times I think up something on the spot, and just edit straight away without another thought.

I'm a storyboarder on my good AMVs, and a chaos engine on the ones I actually make.

It's not a storyboard, they're just guidelines. You often will find things you planned just don't work sometimes, and being able to adjust accordingly due to mood and situation is beneficial as a trait in just those sorts of situations. So I usually just do general outlines based on timecode and independently make clip selection based on what I know/think is editable. I then try to make B) work inside of A). Often that means I don't use a lot of clips I cut, or on the contrary, sometimes I don't cut enough.

Chaos Engine. I just can't even stand clipping, mind you. I just go and pick the scenes while I edit, I already have a rough idea of what I want and where, I just don't write it down with timing precision. I had to do that once with my old pc because it couldn't just bear editing with avs anymore and I had to make lossless clips, so I just sat down and wrote the timestamps of the scenes I wanted and clipped in vdub, but now my pc is strong enough to allow me to just be a chaos engine all the way through.

I agree with Qyot. You can't just write down timecodes and be done with it. Many times I end up with multiple scenes all of which I find don't really work the way I planned.
It may take longer, but I think a bit of both a storyboarder and chaos engine is better to work as since you do plan out your video beforehand, but are able to make changes on the spot if necessary.
Having said that, I'm generally a very slow editor 8-)
