Preview Links and Messages

Postby LittleAtari » Sat Mar 20, 2010 4:10 am

If you visit a video's info page while not logged in, you can still see the option to download the video locally. When you click it though, you get sent to a login page. I'm thinking that the preview links should be added to that public page and people should get redirected similarly. This way the streaming feature is advertised to non-members. Just to clarify, I'm not asking that previews be streamed publicly. I'm just asking for the link to appear.

Now if this were done, the message that displays when linked to a preview while not logged in would also have to change. Right now, if you visit a preview page of a video and you're not logged in, you get the message: "You currently have streaming features disabled." In order to avoid confusion, I think that this should be changed to a login page similar to when you visit a a local download.

It's also a matter of accuracy. Preview doesnt work because you're not logged in, not because you turned off the feature.

I actually think it would be nice if one could preview without being logged in. I sometimes want to show AMVs to friends, but if they don't have org accounts, I have to sometimes spend quite a bit of time searching Youtube for an amv, and it's usually in worse quality than youtube standard. And since some have little interest in AMVs, I'm not gonna demand that they make an org account
Also, in my opinion, it would make things feel a bit more welcoming.

This isnt what this thread is about though :P

I'm just annoyed that when I get linked to a video info page, I have to navigate to the login page. login and then go back the the video info page to get to the preview, whereas, for local DL, all I have to do is click local and it asks me to login and directs me to the download page.

Open the login page in another tab, login, close tab, refresh preview tab.

Oh, and if right click > open in a new tab feels too effort, remember that wheel click is a "shortcut" for that. Wheel click can also be used to close tabs instead of left clicking specifically on the tab's X. So it's basically the same amount of clicks as if it pointed you straight to login. |:

A workaround is ok. Fixing a design flaw is better.

That's actually what I do now and yes, that is annoying. I want to have to avoid doing that. Also, I still think the message that you see on the vid preview page when not logged could be changed to be a little more accurate.

An easier way is to just stay logged in.

Early last year, the login link in the site menu was updated so that when you click it and login you will be redirected to the page you were at when you clicked the link.
