Yeah his voice was always like that even in the last series.
@Ishbalan: I had no idea that the voice actors used objects to get their voices like that. I thought it was just an after-effect. Interesting

Maybe you didn't notice it before because you were younger and didn't have as much of an ear for that sort of thing, or you were too entranced by everything to pay attention to little details like that, but rest assured, it was there in the original series. They had Aaron Dismuke speak into a metal bowl to get Al's voice that way. In the Jap version, Rie Kugimiya spoke into a soda can. I doubt that they would do it any different now since it worked so well the first time.
