Funi to release Edited Anime DVDs

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... bund-edits

I don't particularly want to see nor pick up this anime, but what's your thoughts on Funimation releasing edited versions of the show with no uncensored versions?

And if they edit this one, do you think they will do it again in the future?

I really hope Funi doesn't consider doing this, if it does, it'll almost be like another 4Kids....they start out with the small edits....but then sooner or later, they're editing stuff left and right.

i don't see why they couldnt have both versions on one DVD, or heck, make DVD's of both cut and uncut versions. i don't know exactly what the material they are refering to is but if Seikon no Qwaser gets released uncensored i don't really see what vampire bund would have that would be any more controversial.

If they want to edit it, I think that's alright. I'm not too vexed on this choice for Vampire Bund since I don't watch the show, and honestly if people want to to see it unedited so badly, they can read the manga. Its being legally translated and released in stores now.

Now, I wouldn't want this to be a recurring theme, though. Normally, I would say, "If you want to edit the footage, don't dub it", but my own bias for loving the edited Ocean dub version of Dragonball Z would make me contradict myself. My question is why they are going back to editing anime DVDs in the first place. They released Dragonball Z with their own dub and blew Ocean Studios out of the water (/pun, sorry xD) spouting line after line in their commercials of, "ORIGINAL AND UNCUT." 'Seems to me they're learning what Ocean's intentions were, even if they were a bit disheartening to the older DBZ fan crowd.

I don't know the first thing about the anime, but I have a friend who's a big fan of the manga and after seeing a few pages of it, I can definately see why some stuff may get edited. There are just some things that anime/manga contains that American audiences wouldn't be able to really handle.

I don't see this snowballing outta control till they they reach 4kids One Piece status (Hell, 4kids aren't even that bad. OP are one of the only anime they effed up royally). FUNimation is a company that panders to the crowd as much as they can to sell. They wouldn't risk losing that. I'm pretty sure if they're doing this, there a perfectly good reason.

From what I've seen of this series, some edits will be required to be considered ok in America. I'm surprised that they are licensing it though, since most people really don't know or have interest in the series. I would prefer that no edits or censorship are done from the creator's original vision. Basically, either release it as-is or don't release it at all. But, I was surprised when Funimation took Strike Witches and actually have put some marketing into it (and reconfirmed it is un-edited). Funimation won't go to the 4Kids One Piece level, because it has been obvious that butchering material is fail. Hell, they saved One Piece themselves. I wouldn't get too upset over this particular case.

The massive outcry about this seriously amuses me, and yet frustrates me at the same time.

I really see this as the best way this kind of show could be released in America, just due to the main character. You can say 'she's not really a little girl' all you want, but the fact is, she *looks* like one, and people who would freak out about that kinda thing aren't going to look for a backstory.

I can kinda understand why people would be upset about this, but it seems like people are making a bigger deal about this than necessary. It's a freaking loli, for cat's sake, I'm very surprised something like this is being licenced by FUNi at all. I suppose it sucks that there could be missing scenes in the english release, but shoudln't fans be somewhat happy it's being released at all? I mean, even with these cuts, it will be handled better than anything 4Kids did by far.

I doubt this will be a trend with Funi at all- partially because the whole sexualized-loli aspect forced them to do this (to an extent), but ESPECIALLY after this massive backlash for a show that not many people seem to like. I'm sure they will think twice about this kind of thing from now on.

Censorship in general is wrong. They should simply not license it instead of starting down this path.

I'm just a bit surprised that Funimation would censor this. I recently purchased "Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne", and funimation didn't bother censoring anything.
Spoiler :
Mimi looks like she is about 12 or 13, but they showed all of her nude scenes, the scene where she gets raped, and even the foursome that she has with a bunch of lesbian chicks.
What in the world could be so bad that funimation doesn't want it to be seen. When the Japanese DVDs come out, I really want to see what was censored in the "tv-airing" version.

The outcry is what I find so funny. The edits aren't plot related and yes, I do think they're doing the right thing since the character does look like a little kid. Everyone's making a big whoop about it, but I'd rather have censorship than have the general population think that Funimation sells anime that looks like kiddie porn. It's rated TV-MA as it is so that's enough warning right there.

Seeing how a guy has been put in prison over there in the US for owning lolicon manga, it doesn't surprise me that an anime with loli elements gets the more heavy of those edited out. I mean, afaik the manga of Kodomo no Jikan was about to get licensed by seven seas entertainment over there but they decided to withdraw the idea for the heavy loli content, if that's any valid example for you...
