Episode 1 of the English dub was even worse than I imagined. Most of the voices I grew up with now sound aged and forced. There's none of the spark left in it for me.

Well, it was the first episode, and it wasn't the best one, they should be back in their groove next week though. That's how it was when I watched Slayers Revolution dubbed. They got their voices back by the second episode.

Episode two I thought was good. It was done in a very different way than the original series when they attempted to bring their mom back to life. I love the way that they had Ed interact with that white character (The truth) with the dissolve outline around him. I thought the character design of it was just creepy, but incredibly awesome. I also thought that it was way better to have Ed go through to take the alchemy exam before having to go through a bunch of filler-quality stuff that spanned so many episodes. I liked it! I thought the voice actors were pretty on it, except the voice of Al. It sounds way to feminine. Overall, I think that the show is back.

Al seems to go back and forth between a boyish voice and a girlish voice. When she gets the boy voice down, she sounds pretty spot-on to me.

Yeah, it seems to be hit and miss with her. Episode 2 seemed to be like a prepubescent girl, but episode 3 I thought was better. More masculine than feminine.

Just me, but does anyone else miss the original series's opening dialogue? The new one I don't think is as... elegant (with lack of a better word).

I am a little confused here. In the previews after ep 3, they showed how they are supposed to go to see the sewing life alchemist. In the original, he went there to train to become a state alchemist. So is he just going for another reason? In episode 2 it showed him in front of the furher king bradley and the other guys taking the state alchemy test, where he transmuted a spear thing and Bradley cut it somehow. Will it be the alchemy test again, but in more detail than episode 2, just him going to see the sewing life alchemist Tucker, or did the original mess up the timeline? Sorry, but I never read the manga...

he went there to do research on what tucker was doing

in this ver though
Spoiler :
both nina and tucker bite the bullet by scar's hand during his house arrest, unaware to both ed and al

anyway, I did notice something (in general)
al's voice seems to have a echo's against metal sound
I can hear metal vibration whenever he speaks
that was a nice touch
didnt notice that in the other ver

Maybe you didn't notice it before because you were younger and didn't have as much of an ear for that sort of thing, or you were too entranced by everything to pay attention to little details like that, but rest assured, it was there in the original series. They had Aaron Dismuke speak into a metal bowl to get Al's voice that way. In the Jap version, Rie Kugimiya spoke into a soda can. I doubt that they would do it any different now since it worked so well the first time.
