Either you really like this MEP, or you just don't get a lot of gifts...

For those who don't know: check the announcement thread here.

So now the project is finally done I guess it’s time to explain why I decided to stop doing this after this one track was done. This is not to create drama, but just an evaluation as a coordinator, to see what can be done better in future projects.

Besides the fact that two songs are not in the flowchart, I’m just really disappointed in the outcome this project. At first I was really excited about it and couldn’t wait for a person to upload his/her segment, but eventually spending time each day just felt more and more like a waste of time. It felt like there just wasn’t enough “collaboration”: besides trying to fit to a certain theme or story, a lot of times the segments just didn’t follow the previous one in a good way as well as not setting it up correctly so the next editor can follow it up in a nice way. Also, a lot of footage just didn’t flow (I mean not only with the other segments, but also with the music) and a few editors thought it would be funny to be funny. I don’t mind funny stuff, but at least make it flow for the sake of the end result.

But that is all my fault, I should’ve been more of a conceptual/content-coordinator as well, instead of only a technical coordinator. At first, I just wanted people to think for themselves and let the editors and time decide where the project was heading, but it seems like that was just too much of an ideal situation that will never exist. No way editors will be on the same page without any discussion at all.

Also, a lot of editors understated the time and thought you need to put in the segment. It’s also my fault for saying that it’s not much work for one day. The technical work sure isn’t much and can be done in about 30 minutes, but thinking what to put as a segment requires some more thinking.

Ah well, like I told a lot of people, it was an experiment from the start. I wanted to know how editors handle these situations, their editing-problem-solving skills, collaboration skills, handling with time-pressure, insight in the end result, etc. etc.

If there’s ever going to be next a no-excuses-MEP, I have some ideas to give the editors more direction, but that’s not gonna be in a long while. If anybody wants to do/coordinate a no-excuses project/MEP, feel free to contact me and we can discuss about it.

But some good thing came out of it though. Even though I did not check the history of all MEPs, I think I can safely say we broke some records in the field of Multi-Editor Projects (not counting stuff like IC-compilations and “birthday”-MEPs):

- First MEP using a flowchart in the opening post
- Fastest MEP finished in terms of editing time (53 days)
- Most Dense MEP: 46 editors in 1 minute and 14 seconds

And other miscellaneous stuff:

- First AMV using subtitles for credits
- Started a flowchart-meme
- Started a cheesecake!-meme

Okay, the last two were just my dreams, but hey, those were fun, weren’t they?

Here are some statistics for your enjoyment:

- Total time from first video on timeline to last encode: 53 days
- Total project time (from sign-ups to release): 4 months and 23 days
- Total amount of editors: 46
- Only one editor choose to do a segment with 1 frame
- 3 editors choose to do segments under 1 second
- 26 editors choose to do the full 2 seconds
- I think there was one editor that managed to hand in his segment without even looking at the project
- 23 editors made at least one mistake by not following the flowchart
- The highest number of editors that followed each other by perfectly following the flowchart was 10 editors
- 1 wrong password for the FTP was sent by Douggie
- 2 segments that were marked as FAIL
- 2 segments that were essentially marked as FAIL, but still accepted eventually (used only the first shots of the many)
- 4 segments had follow-ups with another one using the same anime
- 4 empty days were in the schedule
- 1 editor used an animated GIF as footage (I think)
- 1 editor used stills and animated that himself
- 1 editor combined a still with anime
- 44 editors choose to use anime
- 4 editors assembled multiple sources together in order to create one shot
- 15 editors used effects in one way or another

Even though I’m not satisfied with the project, I would still like to thank you editors for participating. It certainly was fun in way and having people excited just before doing their segment also cheered me up! Also,a big thanks to Code who helped me out a lot of days by co-coordinating the project.

On a sidenote, now that I’ve been coordinator, I was wondering why the VCAs doesn’t have a best MEP-coordinator section. I know it’s kinda tricky to vote for that, but since there’s “Most Helpful”, why not “Best MEP-coordinator”? I now realize how tricky and time-consuming it is, even though I probably didn’t have the problems that other coordinators have (people not handing in their segments, MEP-dramas, etc.).

Also, I’m planning to start another MEP which I was intending to do for quite some time. I hope that one is going to be awesome.

Thanks again for joining people!
