Mac User: From DVD to Final Cut Pro

Post by JonnyPhoenyx » Sun Dec 13, 2009 12:20 pm

Hey guys,
I've been reading through guide after guide and haven't quite found what I'm looking for. I'm strictly a Mac user and use Final Cut Pro to edit my AMVs. Usually, I download internet quality ones, but I got sick of the crappy quality. So, I dug into my anime collection and found some anime DVDs that I really wanted to make into contest-worthy AMVs. (FullMetal Alchemist)
My question(s): What steps do i need to take to get the BEST QUALITY footage from my FMA DVDs, into FCP, and export them at the best quality? Compressors, codec, etc.
My current stuff:
Mac OSX 10.5.8
MactheRipper
iSkysoft iMedia Converter TOBW
Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
Handbrake

Prior to deciding on FMA, i did some practice ripping/exporting with gundam wing. The footage itself had out of sync audio, and the export from FCP was odd looking and interlaced.

I'm totally open to downloading different software (except FCP), as long as its free.
Can anyone help me out or a least point me in the right direction? Please and thank you! ^_^

thanks. but is there something that doesn't require me to run windows and mac at the same time? I'd like to just stick with my mac interface...

Umm, tried doing this step-by-step....
a wee-bit complicate for me.

Typically, I'll burn the .VOB files via MactheRipper, import them into iSkysoft using an H264 codec and a .mov format. This gave me a large file of all the footage i want that was compated with FCP. I then put this file into final cut to edit. This produced the not so great Gundam Wing footage.

Can I not do something this simple? Are there better codec/formats to use?

A) Wrong Forum
B) You do not need to "run windows at the same time." Crossover and Wine are not really windows. They simply trick the program into thinking it is running on windows, thus allowing you to use avisynth to filter. You can use vdubmod to output to a HUFFYUV avi, move it to a .mov container via MPEGStreamClip, which is then compatible with FCP.
C) Read ALL THE STICKIES in the Mac Forum, which is where your topic belongs.
D) ????
E) profit!

I will ask this be moved to the Mac Forum.

Funimation DVD Rip - FMA (Already Read sticky)

Post by JonnyPhoenyx » Sun Dec 13, 2009 9:37 pm

I've run into a problem ripping FMA dvds. When reveiewing the files before converting, the skip and jump randomly - like the rip was done properly. I've read over the sticky http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/v ... 44&t=94450, but the directions confuse me a bit.
Has anyone tried to rip FMA dvds? How can I do this? (I hope this is in the right forum b/c this is where the sticky is)

Probably alternate angles (I remember this being a problem other people here had with FMA): You have to rip each episode separately (in IFO mode), and select only the angle you want.

I don't know how to take a pic of it. And I kind of deleted it already... >.<

I saw how to get to the angles in MTR 3.0, how do i know which ones are the ones I want tho? Will it still rip as a .vob?
