The 3 which come to mind instantly are Air, Kanon, Clannad and ESPECIALLY Clannad After Story. They're all made by Key and really good. Some others (dunno if you would be interested) which I can think of are Rurouni Kenshin OVAs and Grave of the Fireflies (its a post-hiroshima movie which was absolutely tear-jerking).

Although I've never actually seen it, based on the AMVs I've seen, I would say Saikano is rather sad.

I second Air... But I only saw Kannon once in 2001 or so (the old one) and, perhaps I was too immature, but I didn't find it sad. Neither do I find Clannad sad now. Grave made me laugh!! Fits of rage at best!! Sad, no.

If you want good Hiroshima type anime check out 'Chikyu ga Ugoita Hi' or The Day the Earth Shook. On second thought, watch Grave as well... it's well worth the watch, even if all it does is put a fire into your belly.

I also second Saikano... though I never seen it either but I seen a lot of Saikano 'clones' (like Iria no Sora: UFO no Natsu, a free fansubbed 'version') and they're always very dramatic, you'll like this one. In fact if I could give you an idea I'd think Macross like. If you like Saikano you'll probably like Macross, though Macross, though it has it's sad moments, isn't sad really..

Here are some suggestions I just came acrossed and agree with 100%, Narutaru, Alien 9, Saikano, Now and then here and now, and Elfen Lied. Also the Makoto Shinkai Trio, Voices of a Distant Star (my favorite), The Place Promised in our Early Years, and 5cm per Second.
If you do not think so... you will DIE

Gungrave has its extremely sad moments, but if you're looking for anime that are simply a pulse-pounding thrill ride of tears, I wholeheartedly suggest you walk out and see that the world's not such a horrible place.

I'll also second Kannazuki no Miko, Romeo x Juliet, and Chrono Crusade. You'll cry buckets.

Well, I prefer funny anime series like Azumanga Daioh so I haven't really seen any really sad ones, but there are some parts of Fruits Basket which were really sad. I actually cried at one or two scenes.

Great thing about Honey and Clover is that it is really hilarious at times. But then there are other times where you seriously want to bawl the crap out of your eyes.

Clannad After Story is especially tearjerking, as well as the last 4 episodes of Wolf's Rain, and Tokyo Magnitude is a real sobfest.
Hope that helped! =D XDD

wow you guys get sad easily :O

Alot of these I wouldn;t classify as sad, just has drama in them. (like toradora for instance...)

I second Clannad after story, AIR, and Saikano though.

Maybe also Crono crusade and RomeoXJuliet. <- this one is kinda expected, so you kinda loose some of the effect.....
