New download method tryout

Postby Phade » Tue Dec 03, 2002 9:42 pm

Hey,

If you don't have my videos yet, there is a new method of download called "local" associated with my videos. It will be the method used to download once the Golden Donut is up and running. Feel free to test it out and make sure it works. Let me know if you have any problem with this new method.

Thanks again and have fun!! ^_^

I right clicked and saved as and it's going smoothly (44kbps). :D

Okay, I'm stupid.

Left-clicked and it started streaming. Stopped it.

Right-clicked and it tried to save something like "localdownload.html". Canceled it figuring that it was some sort of anti-leech protection.

After that I got blocked for trying too many times, so please tell me because I'm apparently dumb as a brick - what do we do exactly?

Hey,

Ahh, yes. I forgot to warn you: there is an anti-multiple-request blocker in place so that people with misconfigured download "accelerators" will be thwarted. Once you request the video to be downloaded, you cannot request the same video to be downloaded for another 60 seconds. This means that if you messed up the download, you have to wait a minute and then try it again.

I've found in the log files where one person has downloaded the same video multiple times at the same time with a misconfigured download "accelerator". This new method is designed to stop that and thus save bandwidth. Subsequent download tries will give a message instead of the video.

Hey,

Trade secret. ;-) Actually, I'd rather not say right now. I don't want people trying to come up with a method to get around it. :) I'll reveal the method later on after it has been well tested.

How bout if I redial my line, my IP changes and the system won't be able to track it right? wait a minute, that's to beat the 60 seconds.... Okay about the downloading...hmmmm..... I give up.

That makes sense, but I still don't know how to use it. Two buttons on a mouse, and both got me to dead ends, y'see.

Hey SarahtheBoring,

Yeah, generally "right-click->Save as..." works. You just have to make sure your current attempt is at least 60 seconds after your last attempt.

So basically, the idea for the local download is that it will download videos when you click on "save as...", but it won't work when you try to download it with a download accelerator like GetRight. Am I correct?

Serv-u has a function much like what Phade is describing, you can ban people for a given time for connecting more than once in a few seconds etc. (of course phade's sounds a little more precise than the 'general' serv-u setting)

Morons on modems still try to dap me (I allow two connections from each ip) ... funny stuff...

As usual, nicely done Phade!
I have sinned. I made a video I wanted to make that was music + anime + sync + action + effects/transitions. Oh lordy.
