Then the problem is laying in the rules & regulation of several US conventions. What do I mean ?
If they are opened for overseas contestants (this also should be marked somewhere that is opened, but anyway I usually ask this by mail before submission) also at least it would be fair to show somewhere that " Award shipping is not granted due to budget reasons" or sth like that. In this case you could know in advance what to expect when you submit sth. This little piece of extra info could avoid a lot of misunderstanding or disappointment -mainly for non-US contestants I think.....
....
...
And another reasonable thing: European contestants cannot just manage to simply jump to USA if there is a Con where he/she submitted something. Despite of -as you said - there is a little do with living in Europe

You completely missed my point.

Ileia wrote:People actually in the US sometimes don't get awards from US conventions unless they pick them up there.

My point simply being that it apparently happens all the time, to lots of people, no matter where they are from, not just to Europeans. I do not know why it happens, I am only supplying possible reasons and offering suggestions on how to help with the problem.

cool...
Yeah maybe it was I-CON28, I don't know...

It has nothing to do with how much money you had, no one put a gun to your head and made you pledge money to the org and not actually go through with it.

You said you were going to give money to the org, you didn't.
They said they were going to give you a trophy and didn't.
Then you post here saying
if they promised something, they should do it.

I was merely pointing out your hypocrisy. I already pointed you to the one forum you actually should post in and might be able to help you but as Ileia pointed out it's common.

I have to agree, I don't see an issue with having to provide shipping everywhere, but if a contest says we will ship to winners anywhere and they don't then that is an issue. It's not about having to get stuff for winning, but not living up to what is advertised to begin with...

As for budgeting for shipping, if you say you will, then you should budget for contests to ensure you can... I always budget a larger amount for shipping and usually end up paying less (so like looks good to the con), but in case one year it's more, it's always covered..

One more thing if a contest has say trophies and ships them across the world, that alone is already a bigger valued prized then even other contests get at cons as shipping has to be calculated as part of that prize value... A few times I’ve heard people say “that all I get” when in fact calculating in the shipping it comes out to more then what even cosplay winners get in some cases

I live in California and sent my vids to Fanime Con (which is also in CA), won best action and still didn't have anything shipped to me.

Due to the bad economy, I doubt a lot of cons, unless they save up like Vlad does, are able to ship out prizes in these hard times. I just plan to wait until next year and have a friend proxy to pick them up for me and then just give it to me when we meet. If you have a friend who lives near the con, you can try that, or offer to help pay for the shipping yourself. That's all you can do.

Communication is key. If something's come up, the coordinator should be providing information about what's up.

I've waited for almost a year for awards from a con on multiple occasions (and honestly believe the only reason they showed up was because I complained). On the other side, i've had my awards "lost in shipping" for a couple of months by relying on other people to send them out.

And to the OP - a pledge is a promise... so you did promise to send money and did not - thus your "defaulted" status.

Quite honestly, the cons I do the contest for have a much tighter budget.. It's really is all in how you ask for it... Besides, the point is that if someone promisses it in the rules or says it they should follow through or not say it in the first place, that is the issue here more then anything

Yeah, that's the certificate I'm waiting for as well. I know it's just a simple thing in a cheap frame - they said so at the awards ceremony! :D (saw it on yOOtOOb)

Me too, but I've written my address a few times to the coordinator, but there's no reply since that date. I think I'll give up. So... you are not alone, Shana ;) :(

...and in first, attitude. This is not question of money budget I think. It's very nice that many coordinators are active and enthusiast during the submission period but after the announcement they are tend to disappear or ignore you. How interesting this two-face attitude...

Even in the middle of economical crisis the basic, naturally required habit, that winners should be contacted and notified by the coordinator must not be a question. At least notify them about the impossibility of shipment be any reason for it. Correct way and neither both parties will expect more than should or want. :|
