Death of Sad animes??

Postby Knowname » Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:57 am

K I was just watching Soukyuu No Fafnir: Right of Left and it kept me up all night, it was so sad. I could recall a time when I could virtually expect that after most series' now... whatever happened to the rule where the hero/ heroine dies in some traumatic event of epic proportions like Rahxephon, EVA, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and on and on and on. Can you think of ANY recent animes that are as traumatic?? Seriously all animes in recent memory are either harem/ 4h like K-ON or Haruhi or action (but the main character DOESN'T die!!) like Black Cat!! What's up with that?? I mean there are a few spice of life things too, but the genre where a BUNCH of nice folks die in some TERRIBLE AND CLATACLYSMIC event just doesn't exist today and I don't know why?? Were they not selling? Were they not the most popular series' in 2003-2004 etc? Do you think Hideaki Ano gets more revenue from EVA or Kare Kano?? SERIOUSLY.

Ok, Lockon's death and a couple others I can understand but, Trinity Siblings and Wang Liu Mei? Their's aren't even sad, in fact they deserve it.

One series I like to mention is Space Runaway Ideon. Most of you have never heard of it or may have but never seen it. It's a very old underrated mecha anime made in the 1980s and was directed by the creator of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino. He earned the nick name "Kill'em All Tomino" because he literally killed off EVERY character in this anime. Some deaths are funny to watch especially the grunts in the first half the series however most of the tragic deaths comes near the end of the series. Someone uploaded a video compiling all deaths of the major characters. You see people getting shot multiple times, kids getting getting their heads popped off by bazookas, main pilot's girlfriend's head blown off, characters getting burned to death, and so on. If you watch this video, you can see the level of violence taken on this show.

Most of the death scenes were from the 2nd Ideon movie Be Invoked. The 2 movies are basically compilation movies while the 2nd gives the true ending to the series. Even though this show will not likely appeal to many people and never get licensed, give the 2 movies a try. It's definitely worth the watch.

Hmm death isn't the only thing that can make a person sad you know.

Watching a lot of romance driven anime can be sad if it is relationship driven and the boy girl ratio means someone get's left out.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

I think I've become immune to the loser boy losing out on the chick thing... or the chick dying. It's all been done, and just like the 'everybody dying' complex to enter the millennium I bet this will change and become virtually nonexistent for a bit. It's all so predictable.

people need to stop fawning over this new otaku harem anime shet so we can get stuff like the good old shows where character development was actually important and tragedies arent solely based on killing a bunch of loli girls off one by one.

But with how the economy is right now its not likely that anyone in the anime industry will be willing to take such a gamble.

Well it's not just that. There are alot of people who just hate watching sad endings. Even story writers mostly prefer a happy ending where everything works out/returns to normal in the end some how. It's silly actually cause sad endings can be very epic. Look at clannad for example. It could of had an epic sad ending of suicide to some degree but obviously alot of people would of been mortified by it more so then liked it for its uniqueness. The human heart is the bane of sad endings, it depends on the personality of the story's creator.

IMO: Sad endings are just as good/better as happy ones. Though sad endings have more of an impact on emotions which can either be enjoyable to some degree if you can handle them or ulcer producing/emo for a few days if you cant. Even if it had the latter effect on you... I'd say it was a damn good ending if it effected you that much.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

yeah I hated Clannad's happy ending (and the little side story...) I'm like, how does that even make sense?? What a waste of time.

These deaths are all shallow compared to Towards the Terra where.
Spoiler :
Soldier Blue dies. Jomy dies. Keith dies. Sam dies. !!!->Matsuka<-!!! dies, the elders die, Jomy's speechless friend dies, the people who started life on the other planet died, Tony's gf dies, 2 other of the type blue children die

So many high impact deaths in the show since there is so much character development T_T

I'm disappointed that very few of you are going into any sort of detail about these deaths.
