EXP Con Anime Music Video Contest

October 9-11, 2009 in St. Augustine, Florida

To find out more about the con check out http://www.expcon.org

Time to promote EXP Convention's second year contest on the ‘org!

The EXP Con Anime Music Video Contest is an opportunity for everyone, from amateurs to professionals, to showcase their video editing talent! Anime Music Videos or AMV’s for short, are videos composed of anime and/or video game footage, then set to music, creating a fan made music video. There are different categories and levels (from novice to professional) that you can enter into. Make a video geared towards a certain category or just let your imagination run wild leaving it to the judges to discern the category your video belongs in. Videos will be judged by members of EXP Con staff and the Animebelle.com members AMV critique squad.

The attendees loved the entries last year and the EXP Con staff is anxiously looking forward to the videos we will be receiving this year. Good luck to everyone! The winners of last years contest can be found at the following link: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=91355

Categories

Please note that these categories are only examples and suggested guidelines of the categories that may be awarded in the EXP Con Fall 2009 AMV Contest. Actual Categories will be selected by the judges, based on actual entries received. For example, if no action entries are submitted, or only one or two videos that do not accurately reflect the theme of the category, an award for Best Action AMV may not be presented.

The categories are as follows:

Action
Drama
Romance
Comedy
Parody
Technical
Novice
Pro

Remember these are categories of AMV’s, not specific awards. A Best of Show will be given, and more awards may be added at the judges discretion, such as AMV with most Gusto.

Note: “Comedy” refers to comedic AMV’s in all forms, while “Parody” specifically refers to videos of a satirical imitative nature (ie, television commercials, movie trailers, etc.). The Novice Category is open to only editors who have not won a “Best of “award (Best of Show, Best Comedy, Best Technical, etc.). Honorable Mentions are still allowed under the Novice category, and purely internet contests are not counted as official awards. The “Pro” Category is open only to specific editors that have won an award previously.
Rules

All entries must be received by 12:01 am on Friday, September 25th 2009 to provide adequate time for judging.

All entries must have premiered no earlier than October of 2008.

Each entry will be limited to a maximum length of seven (7) minutes.

Only three (3) entries will be accepted per individual.

Entries may not be smaller than 640x480, and may not run at a slower speed than 23.97 frames per second.

The preferred formats for AMV submissions are Xvid (AVI) and MPEG-4, but MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and Divx will also be accepted. We will not be accepting WMV, RM, RAM, RA, or FLV formats. If you need help converting your WMV videos to another format, please use the following guide: http://www.wikihow.com/convert-.wmv-to-.avi-legally.

To ensure that your video plays at its best, please include two seconds of blank footage before your video begins.

Entries will be disqualified for inappropriate content, including but not limited to nudity, graphic sexual content, excessive violence, and excessive foul language. The judge’s decision on disqualification is final, so if you are concerned about the content of your video, please censor it on your own before submitting it. As a general guideline, all entries should fall within an MPAA rating of PG-13 or lower. You can learn about this rating here: http://www.mpaa.org/flmrat_ratings.asp

If we send in an anamorphic MPEG-4, will it play back correctly? How about an anamorphic widescreen MPEG-2?

What audio codecs are acceptable?

As for the video, because I don't have access right now to the computer the files will be playing on or the projector that will be used, I can't say off the top of my head if the video will appear properly or appear stretched.

We're either going to be using VLC Media Player or Media Player Classic, with the projector -probably- using a standard 4:3 aspect ratio, although we might be using an HD projector.

If your video shows properly on a 4:3 screen using VLC and MPC, then chances are, it is going to display correctly.

That was the fastest response I could get from one of my AMV staff. I will try to have a more detailed response asap. Let me know if you have any more questions :D

I had such a blast at last year's EXP Con.
I'm happy to see you guys making an effort here on these forums to try and rally some support for your AMV contest. It's more than any other Florida con has put forward this year.

What sort of thing defines a novice?

Thanks for the praise! I myself am a huge AMV fan. I really want to get into doing more events geared towards anime music videos this year. Last year we were very happy with the quality of AMV's we received. It really got us excited for the future. I hope that going forward we can become one of the better overall contests for AMV's in Florida.

Our judges define novice as someone who has not won an award previously. I might have to double check, but I don't think that includes honorable mention, so if you were honorably mentioned... you should be good to qualify for this category. Let me know if anyone has any more questions.

When I sent in my video I forgot to add the premier date... what should I do? My AMV is Naritakisou Forever and the premier date is... 2009-07-10... yesterday.

Action
Drama
Romance
Comedy
Parody
Technical
Novice
Pro

This confuses me should it be:

Pro:
Action
Drama
Romance
Comedy
Parody
Technical

Novice:
Action
Drama
Romance
Comedy
Parody
Technical

Would a pro video not compete in any category, same goes for novice?

Also would you take a Music Video done to say Invader Zim?

My guess would be that a Pro video would be one that had previously won an award elsewhere, and that Novice would be for a first-time editor.

I think his question, though, is whether Pro and Novice are categories separate from Comedy, Action, Drama, etc.
