encoder wont work

Postby micktam12 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:51 am

Hello all,

Well I am trying to compress, a video about a 56 second video to test out the mp4 format thing. since everyone is b2tching about it to me. But when I encode it, it doesn't stop encoding, it took two hours for just the audio to encode. After that I gave up and closed out of it.

BTW i tried to use YAMB, but that didn't work either it said that there was a problem with it.

Any suggestions ?

That's what he's using actually... From what I was able to understand on IRC, it's just his pc that isn't powerful enough to handle well the x264 encoding.

Choose different options. Insane level settings take forever to encode. My own profiles move along at .2 fps, and that's the more permissive distro one (the 'master' encode usually dips below .1 fps - even compressing the lossless copy with Lagarith takes less time, by several orders of magnitude). And I use x264 directly, via the command-line. Or otherwise, through MeGUI.

As a very basic measure, use just CRF 18. No other options, just CRF 18. Even on my comp doing that doesn't get me over 3 or 4 fps. If you have to, set it up and let it encode overnight.

As for audio, encode it separately if you have to. Take the .wav and give it to Nero or iTunes - there's no way it should take 2 hours to encode.

YAMB, or MP4Box in general, is only meant to mux together video and audio that's already been encoded. It doesn't encode stuff for you.

I honestly cant imagine audio taking 2 hours to encode for a 1 minute clip. I mean seriously, my little netbook pc with a wimpy processor can encode audio far faster than that. Do you have anything else running on your pc, using up 100% of your cpu cycles?

What type of CPU do you have, and what is the speed of it?

The default settings in Zarx264gui are recommended.
