unpaid advertisements to make the site look better

Postby dazza1008 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 7:01 pm

So, in a nutshell, the site wouldn't stand up to legal scrutiny, since AMVs are made using copyrighted material. But companies can turn a blind eye to it, because it promotes the fandom, which is an x-factor that would lead to greater interest = more sales.

An interesting thing happened the other day - YT recognised my audio, but instead of disabling it, they added an advertisement to download the song legally off iTunes. (because the audio was produced by UMG, not Warner)

So, I wanted to get your general ideas on it (hence the 'general amv' section) - what about making the site look more profitable for THEM by including links to legally download the music used? It could just be a general iTunes link, which is what YT does, I think. And I'm not sure how to link to legal anime stores - it would depend on the country. Could have a list.

It is a BIG point in this community to make sure that sources for AMVs are obtained legally (people are reprimanded for downloading illegally, or asking how to do that), so it would seem to create more profit for the companies. The fact the advertisement is unpaid and we're doing it out of a sense of moral obligation to support the companies would be a point that needs to be mentioned next to the advertisement, so it doesn't seem that the org is making profit from advertisements, which was Phade's concern before.

Because sometimes I really don't know where to purchase old music/series. A link would help.

Thoughts?

That would probably be a huge technical issue that I doubt anyone wants to tackle.

Aside from the tech, it'd run into issues of who gets linked. Link to, for example, amazon for the anime and some people will get pissy because they think Best Buy is cheaper while others whine that it isn't Rightstuf or some other anime specific company and others argue it should link to the Viz directly or whoever the anime company in question is. Plus there's the unspoken assumption of profit. If you see an ad, you assume the site is making money off it. Which is, usually, true. So by trying to be selfless the org would actually end up appearing like it's profiting off the hobby.

Yeah that is true. This is supposed to be a .org site.

The 'tube is for-profit so that was a natural (and not unexpected) addition to their service.

I don't see the .org doing something similar since I'm sure it involves licensing fees, a more sophisticated music identification system than what we have now (which is based entirely on the editor entering the correct information), and lots of legal wrangling (e.g. U-Tube and Warner Music).

I'd assumed it would be connected to the info entered, and like Willen said, I'd assume it would be correct info entered.

Point taken about where to link to, but hey, it could even be general sites, not specific song/anime links. Could even be the same thing repeated for each AMV, but emphasised that these links are for genuine products (not bootlegs) and it's ethical to support the industry. You know, the usual stuff that comes up whenever a n00b asks where to download anime.

And I agree that ads imply profit, which is why a statement would need to be alongside the ad saying that no money was made by providing the links.

Licensing fees? For UNPAID advertisements? I don't think so...

Why the fuck would anyone want to impose ads on their users without getting paid for doing so?

I was under the impression that any profit from the ads goes to paying for our bandwidth O.o

Ads are ugly by the way. It'd be pointless to put unpaid ads.

Why would we have ads without getting paid? To give the impression that we're supporting the industries (both anime and music). Thus hopefully they're not out for our blood as much.

And Phade was saying, he didn't want to have paid ads on the site, because he didn't want the impression we're making money off distributing others' intellectual property.

But some people are dumb and won't be able to figure out that they aren't paid ads.
