I'm looking at dual Xeon 5580's for my next build when I can afford it. Not a huge gamer so I'm building it for 3D design applications and video editing. You went with water cooling, is that a must or did you do that so you could OC it?

Hey Pwolf,
yeah two Nehalem Xeons are def a good idea. if i had known earlier that they released dual lga1366 this quickly i would've held off on my current build.

i went with WC so i could OC it, i had stock CPUs at 2.66Ghz. and I had heard those Xeons did a great job at OCing and being stable. (i apparently got a bad cut for my 2nd Xeon, but oh well) Plus the next jump up from my Xeons was like a $400 increase per cpu. and i wasn't ready to shell out and additional $800 just for dual 3.0Ghz. mind as well overclock with some nice WC. plus with WC, i get to get a block for my Video card in the future and put that on water as well.

OCing is always a good idea to get more "ooomfph" from ur CPU and make it more 'worth it'. Since buying dual cpus really is not a 'cheap' solution.
--
be wary however, the dual xeon boards are still relatively new. the north bridge architecture may not be perfected. not all have pci-e slots, some do, but some may not. depending on what video card you get to assist in rendering 3d you might be limited on your options.

Yea, I haven't decided on which mb to get yet. I was looking at ASUS: either Z8PE-D12x or Z8PE-D18x (more ram). Haven't been able to find a lot of articles out there where people have built and tested dual Nahalem Xeons for reference. Its a lot of money to shell out as the cpu's are $1700 already so its nice to have something to look at for reference when trying to buy parts. I'm not big on OCing so I don't plan on it. I'm mostly worried about fitting everything into a standard ATX case and having enough clearance between the ram/peripherals/hsf.

i think i know a few people on the XS forums that might have this build already, i'll ask around.

Oh yeah, you might need to consider getting a bigger case for this set up. A standard case might not have the correct holes and space to even hold the motherboard you are considering.

It is very very rare they will make a server/workstation board in ATX form factor. too much hardware that needs to go on.
But then again most of the bigger cases can handle 13"x12", but thats up to you.
If you want a nice case with lots of space and good air flow i recommend 'mountain mods'. They house workstation builds all the time.

If you saw from my video, i had a huge ass case, the mobo was bigger than your average ATX. :\ 12x10.5 SSI CEB form factor.
The skulltrail is the only dual cpu slot board out there that is standard eATX size.

or you could wait around for Intel to release another skulltrail type motherboard for the Nahalems.

newegg shows: Cooling device not included - Processor Only
i'd invest in some nice heatsinks, those intel stock ones really do suck,
add some AS5 as well!

Ew... Xbox 360 controller. I use my Sixaxis. I installed the driver and everything and I'm using Pinnacle Game Profiler so I can map it to the keyboard.
