Shangri-La

Synopsis:
The story is set in a neo-futuristic age, in which Tokyo has turned into the world’s largest “jungle-polis” that absorbs carbon dioxide. A tower city called Atlas houses the rich and privileged, and is the object of yearning of all who are not allowed to enter. But Atlas also has ancient secrets which cause a sudden whirl of events. Festooned by colorful characters such as a riotous teenage girl, a child genius, a juvenile princess, a drag queen, a female doctor, an army major, and an elderly gentleman and lady, SHANGRI-LA’s hard-core world view plays out as an anime action saga.
A striking vision of Earth's future from some of Japan's foremost creative talents, SHANGRI-LA is a tale of greed and division vs. bravery and the human spirit. Set against the backdrop of a Tokyo cityscape turned into a teeming jungle by runaway global warming, with the elite living in the comfort of the tower city, Atlas, and the less-privileged masses struggling in the squalor in the jungle – only one girl, Kuniko Hojo, and her band of guerrillas can find a way to preserve the future for everyone..

I got interested in this anime because I heard the character designs were by the same guy who did Last Exile. The first episode did an excellent job introducing the cast and the setting. It looks like this one is going to be a good action anime with likable characters, a behind-the-scenes magical conspiracy, and lots of political talk and military involvement. Exactly what I was looking for. I anticipate many good things to come.

HIS NAME IS RANGE FUCKING MURATA. REMEMBER IT GODDAMMIT SERIOUSLY. FFFFUUUUUU-

Anyway, I have high expectations for this show, given the last time Murata and GONZO collaborated we were left with Last Exile, which I happen to have loved.

Renge Murata ftw, beyond actually seeing how series like last exile and blue sub #6 turned, have you seen his concept art or original work? Freaking amazing!

I'll probably wait till this gets a few episodes in.

I just watched it.

And I couldn't say I enjoyed it to the fullest, but I did enjoy it. The characters were introduced well, and that boomerang weapon of hers is awesome. At this point, I'm not sure if I'm going to stick around for the whole series, but I will keep up with it until it starts to bore me. A good (hopefully) anime is in the making!

Pretty...

But at the same time, the premise verges on incoherent.

I watched the first episode cuz of the poster. I thought it would be interesting and I liked the character.
But I was dissapointed. The animations are quite good but the story is like 'uugh'

I'll watche the 2nd episode and if its still boring, I'll definitively drop the anime.

Poor start GONZO )'=

Lots of uh, 'strange' people in here but the fights are good though there is one odd thing.

One can NOT, seriously you can NOT be a camera on the ground, shooting a skirted girl flying over rooftops and NOT get a freakin' panty flash.

Totally unrealistic. I WILL COMPLAIN about lack of pantyshots if the origin of point makes it realistic... YEESH DAMNIT, FROM ROSARIO TO NO PANTIES EVAR?! [then again, I prefer women over loli's, nvm...]

I'm noticing some skimping on the animation quality. The first episode was great, but the definite figures have been steadily falling out of place. Still plenty of action and mystery, but they really need to give less screen time to that fat tranny. I really don't think s/he appeals to anyone.

So far, it's really intrigued me: especially episode 3. Atlas sounds a bit like Paradise from Wolf's Rain. =O An area thought to be beautiful, and where many people would like to go: and yet, you have to lose so much to get in, and it might not even be what people expected.
