Just decide if you think it's crap before 30 seconds is up and you don't have to star it. >_>;;

Or if you think it is crap, take the one or two seconds it takes to rate it as such. Now that you can quickly rate videos as you watch them there is hardly a reason that you should encounter the '10 videos pending star rating' limit.

Wow, not having any open star slots means I can't even look at a video info page that includes streaming? Ouch.

You can still look at the video info page but you won't be able to stream videos on the video preview/random vid page until you rate videos just like with the local download system. If you are at the 10 pending star limit you will still be able to stream videos you have already rated or videos that are pending a star rating...

It mirrors the local download system in this regard which has been in use for years now. If we required it before why wouldn't we now? :?

Oh, I didn't notice that it was a different page. I thought the random video link was taking me to the actual information page, but it just told me the title and editor of the video.

Does the streaming only show up through the random video link, or is it possible to choose what we stream?

...or is this still in the testing phase and not actually official yet?

This is one of the pages non-donators will have access to. There is more to come... you can consider this early beta.

Hey Eric, can you check up on this video's streaming encode?

It came up on the random page and it looks like crap + page is lagging. Was wondering if that's an encoding thing (perhaps weird format it encoded from) or if it's just a slow machine on my end...

Also, I like how the streaming option actually makes a good case FOR good encoding rather than against it (as some people might've suspected). Videos that were obviously lazily cleaned up and encoded look kind of meh in streaming, but I have to say ones that were encoded well (e.g. Beowulf's Black Sabbath I just saw on the random page) look freaking gorgeous. Hopefully people will realize that pretty quickly and the streaming will only encourage good encoding.

I had something similar to oto. First time I tried the video had horrible lag, frequent pauses, and unsyncing the audio and video. I let it load completely so it wasn't that I was trying to play more than I had downloaded. Since it was the first vid I tried I just assumed it was a beta bug or something. Later I tried again and everything worked fine. I don't remember what vid it was I had that problem with but I know it wasn't the one Otohiko linked to. I do remember the one it was a WMV and otohiko's link is also a WMV. I just hit the random link about a couple dozen times and had the same problems with this vid and this one. Those were the only two WMVs that popped up. Everything else was avi, mp4, or mpg and I didn't have an issue with any of them. So with admittedly very limited testing it appears there may be an issue if the original video is WMV.

The local video appears to be quite grainy. I've noticed that mirksop's video "cookies" also has horrible streaming quality but in that case it is because he has a shitload of stars flying across the screen non-stop..

We just made some changes to the encoding scripts so we can record psnr and ssim data to the database. We will need some time for enough videos to be encoded to guage what values should trigger a re-encode with higher bitrates.

Once that functionality is in place we will probably re-encode some of the videos that have been encoded poorly.

It is possible that the source format is the cause... I've been noticing that WMV files are taking significantly longer to encode than the other formats...

Huh, almost strange, considering Beo's video played just fine for me (and that one's quite heavy on noise and such). But alright, we'll see how that works out I suppose.
