Interesting, it doesn't appear to be available for download anymore (I'm assuming it once was) and the description now says absolutely nothing useful at all, not even telling what song it used (again, I'm assuming that it did at one point). I'd say just taking the video and replacing the audio with the English version is a bit silly- but if it is clearly stated that this is what was done with proper credit given (preferrably after checking with the original creator), it may not be very original, but it's not quite the root of all evil. Not giving credit for who did the editing if it wasn't them- that's quite definitely wrong.

If they had taken the video and put it to an entirely different song, again with giving credit to the original editor, I'd probably have even less of a problem with it, especially if it was done in good fun. I think it would be amusing to find a serious video that just happened to match up well with, say, a Weird Al song. That would fall into the category of 'parody', at least in my opinion, and not count as plagiarism (again, if credit to the original creator is given)

This actually brings up something I've been curious about for a while- what the general opinion on 'remastering' other people's older videos is. Example: The only form I have any of Bobby 'C-ko' Beaver's videos in is a not-particularly high generation (and now aging) VHS tape- which includes one of my favorite videos, his 'Phantom Bride' Project A-ko vid. Given I have all the DVD source and the CD the song is on, I've been tempted to attempt to re-make it to have a high-quality, non-degrading media copy of it. If I were to do so, would it be best to just keep it to myself, or try to make it available to others (obviously after trying to get permissions from the original creator first)?

I can speak as someone who's had this attempted.

Jingoro, he of the Disney DDR project, tried to remaster my Nausicaa video using a widescreen LD copy of the film, and hit a major stumbling block. See, I used Warriors of the Wind, and there's one shot in my video, perfectly clean, that has big fat Japanese credits plastered over it on the LD.

To get back to the original question, I didn't know at first that he was planning on it, but once I found out I had no problem with it, mainly because I knew him and was friends with him. As such I had no problem with it--and it's an amusing story to boot.

I'd be willing to bet that a creator like C-ko wouldn't have much problem with someone making his videos look better, so long as they were shot-for-shot identical and still credited to C-ko, perhaps with a smaller remastering credit for yourself.

Still wouldn't hurt to ask first, unless you're in the situation I was.

You're not gonna believe this... there are 4 opinions for that video (now simply called "blah", with no info--that's different than the last time I checked it), and the creator is one of those who gave all 1's for an opinion!

Ouch! That's gotta hurt... even the creator thinks it's bad enough to give it all 1s...

They probably felt really bad because I doubt they realized what they did was going to be a big deal to anyone. I saw their list of amv's to create on their website so hopefully, they are all original material and they stick with it.

And for the re-mastering someone else's amv's...it had crossed my mind as well. Problems I have..it's an old ranma video (no, not a johnson or thompson) that I have no idea where to find the creator's contact info. It's not listed here at all.

I thought it looked an interesting project because it's an interesting one..edits aren't too complicated...but would it be ok? Maybe someday I'll release the hounds, find the creator and then start if they say ok 8)

Also easy to do is put up some kind of a disclaimer slate, saying that you didn't do this originally, but chose to remaster it. Nothing other than the video and audio quality are changed; artistically, this AMV is the same.

I'd say that 95% of potential ill will is defused by putting up said slate, even if you don't know the creator. Word might even filter back better that way.
