Ok, im working on the guide again and will hopefully actually finish it this time

I have a live beta version posted up at http://zarxrax.kicks-ass.net/avtechbeta/index.html
Right now, I am currently looking for feedback on the THEORY GUIDES section. I have made some massive changes there, removing lots of useless info, adding some new pages, and moving pages from other sections of the guide, all in an attempt to make it more user-friendly and useful.
Let me know of any problems you see, such as typos or broken links, any blatantly incorrect information, or just let me know if I have left out something important.

Once again, for right now I am only looking for feedback on the THEORY GUIDES section.

Thoughts after reading the first few sections...

I think this may have been mentioned before, but in the "Video Basics" section there is a (brief) descussion on PAL as well as NTSC (which is good), but in the section "The Big Picture" which talks about interlacing, NTSC is the only thing discussed. I realise that deinterlacing PAL is a much easier thing than NTSC but as things stand a noob with an R2 disk is going to be confused.

In the Colorspace section DV is referenced (which is good), but given that HDV has been around for a while now I think it is worth a mention too. BTW: HDV is 4:2:0, but that is at HD resolutions, good codecs working with HDV at SD resolutions can actually get 4:2:2.

I don't know a lot about either PAL or HDV, so if you want to try writing something for it, it might be better than what I could cobble together.

I just downloaded the new AMVapp 3.0 Beta, but as soon as I hit run, this message pops up:

".NET runtime library v2.0 or newer is required for some components of the AMVApp. Your have 1.1.4322."

It's something I can install by pushing okay or clicking cancel to continue running the program. I would like to know:

What is ".NET runtime library v2.0" and how important is it for running certain applications in AMVApp?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework

In short, it probably depends on which program. From looking at the listing here, only Zarx264gui requires it.

Thanks for the info and link; Plus, I decided to install it individually to pull off a test run in case I don't have ".NET runtime Library framework". Apparently, it works might fine. I downloaded it, unzipped it, then opened it. It opened smoothly without giving a error message of some sort. So, I do have the framework after all. I'm definately downloading the rest of AMVapp, but without selecting this application now that I have it.

Can't wait to see what I can do now.

Hello.

Not to rush or anything, but since the guide and AMVapp features are being tested for improvement (which I'm proud of Zarxrax is doing right now), approximately, how will it take until they are completely revised or finished?

Alright. After reading through the entire posting so far, it sounds like it will take more time until the guide and the AMVapp program to finish. In the meantime, since I downloaded that Zarx264gui and will soon plan to download the rest of AMVapp 3.0 beta, I'll take the initiative to do a little test run and see if I encounter any problems or issues.

Before I go, I do have a question though. After reading about the Premiere avs plugin, I realized I don't have Adobe Premiere on my computer. Since AMVapp allows the person to choose which programs to install or not install, would unchecking the plugin and Zarx264gui affect the installation?

Unchecking it will simply not install those things.

Good. :D

The installation completed with flying colors and all programs are installed except for the plugins.

I did notice one thing about the VirtualDubMod, Matroska support. I know that earlier posts mentioned about this kind of support. It's a good thing I tried opening the program and checked it out because I recieved this warning message:

"Matroska support in VirtualDubMod is now rather old and simple. Many features offered by this format aren't supported in this program:

- Variable FramRate
- Advanced chaptering
- Advanced tagging
- Advanced subtitles such as SSA, ASS or VobSub
- Native AVC Support
- ...

In order to fully enjoy those features, you should consider using more recent tools such as AVI-Mux GUI (by Alexander Noe') or MKVToolnix (by Moritz Bunkus)."

The program still opened, but I just wanted to bring this up just in case. It's my first using it.

It's normal. It just means that the features of MKV that virtualdub has are very limited - it can only make VfW MKVs. Things such as softsubs, VFR, chapters, alternative A/V Tracks and so on (some of them are listed in the warning, if you check) aren't supported, neither for input, nor for output. If you wish to make an MKV with every feature, use the MKVMergeGUI inside the MKVToolnix.
Still, for AMV purpose, you'll hardly need any of those features. What you want to do in vdub is making .avi files with an xvid/divx video compression and a lame mp3 audio compression, that is. Then you either use zarx264gui or megui or something else for the mp4/mkv with the h264+aac streams and that's it. Some older computers have difficulties with h264, hence why some people make a double release, but really you can just choose one or the other as you like.

So, these features aren't necessary for making AMVs. That explains why the zarx264gui, xvid, and lame compressor came with the package. Well, that pretty much summed that up for me. Thanks alot! :D

Hmmmm, I'm about to redo my computer and am beginning to wonder if it's really a good idea to use AMVapp anymore...I absolutely love it, but it's just so out-of-date...even the "beta" is two years old now... :(
