I have huge doubts about this movie (I have had them since I heard about this)...

It seems nostalgia is the latest trend these days... though TOS wasn't my favorite series anyways :P (heh...)

The motorcycle scenes remind me of the prequel of the Star Wars Trilogy previews with Anakin for chapter III... it was the first thing to come to my mind sorry. And I was all WTF?!?! about the fact that Chibi-Kirk nearly drove himself off a cliff in a Mustang.... O.o

And well not that Shatner was a brilliant actor in his time (hahahahahahahahahahahahahaaha *ahem*), but I donno about this guy playing Kirk in the movie.. I guess I'll see when the movie comes out... But I can't say that any the "Kirk stuff" looked remotely interesting to me... However the "Spock stuff" looks promising... O.o The effects look kickass O.o but I donno what I'll think of the story...

Being a resident "Trekkie" I'm going to go see it anyways, however I'm going to have low expectations, but then again I usually do... I just don't want to get myself pumped up to see this "amazing film" and be disappointed by shoddy acting overshadowed by amazing effects.

P.S. all the hardcore nerds on one of my Yahoo Groups is all over this movie half think its going to be terrible just because the set design is drastically different, the other half are willing to give it a chance...

I'm one of those willing to give it a chance, but I'm not going to expect anything from it.

The charm of Star Trek was how cheesy it was. TOS was barely a step ahead of Buck Rogers for christ sake. The entire franchise went straight to the shitter once they started taking themselves seriously. I mean come on, most of the best moments in the movies were pure cheese. "Don't forget where we parked" "Excuse me, why would god need a starship?" and other such lines.

I'm not really seeing any indications this movie will return to the cheese so fuck it, the series is dead to me. Has been since the first season of DS9 really.

I completely missed the original Star Trek, before my time, always seemed too old fashioned and dated as a kid. I was a Next Generation girl. I read the kiddie novels and then the teenage novels, and loved the series and the moves and all the characters had a special place in my heart. I tried following some of the characters when I heard they popped up in subsequent series (DS9, maybe), but it didn't work. It wasn't just one or two likable characters, it was the whole team and how they fit together. I'd sooner re-rent TNG from netflix than go watch this new movie. I never got to know the original Star Trek guys, so I'm not interested in their "younger" selves. I might watch it if a family member buys it and lends it to me a few years from now, just to see some space ships.

Now, if they decided to make a movie based on the next generation "kiddie" backstories in those junior novels, I'd love to watch that. It might take time to get used to the new actors playing the roles, but I'd be invested in the characters. And some of those little novelettes had really interesting stories.

I saw the new trailer during the previews for QoS.

I'm excited, but I do wonder now that I know more about the story if this movie will have an Enterprise effect on the original storyline. The bridge in the trailer seems more advanced then the enterprise B did. I can understand the update in the outside CG, using the new technology. I realize that without some updates in the look they wont be able to sell the movie to anyone who hasn't seen the original and would go for the nostalgia of it.

It looks like they've done a fairly good job finding actors who look similar to how the original actors did back in the day. I'm excited to see how this new story will play out.

I'm just a little leery.

Grant it, that's not gonna stop me from catching the Midnight showing and probably watching it 2-3 more times that opening Friday.

Aside from the Tribble episode which was some awesome series blending and probably one of my favorite episodes... there wasn't much in the way TOS/DS9 crossovers aside from referencing episodes and concepts... TNG had all the older actor cameos.

....

Even with all it's cheese, TOS still made a lot of political statements that reflect the time it was created in.

And as for the Enterprise effect - that's exactly what came to mind when I heard about this... But the creators of Enterprise didn't want to make a Star Trek series, they wanted to make a space/sci-fi adventure series that happened to have familiar aliens :/

When I first saw that this was being made I facepalmed. But strangely, I find myself wanting to see this more and more to see what kind of a spin Abrams can put on it. I wouldn't exactly say I'm excited about it, but I am curious and will probably check it out.

I've been a Star Trek fan for a while now too. From TOS it was episodes like Errand of Mercy and Balance of Terror that I found I enjoyed the most. Campy yes, but still brimming with political intrigue and in the case of Balance of Terror, a fantasic starship duel lifted from an old WWII movie. From TNG it's I, Borg or The Defector, which were more sappy then cheesy really, but they always get me.
DS9, In the Pale Moonlight, no contest. Neither sappy nor cheesy, but I'd say my favorite Trek episode of all time, from any series. I has the Romulans at their best, intrigue out the yin yang, and a moral dilemma you'd never expect a federation captain to be grappling with.

I caught the trailer for the new movie at QoS like ngsilver, and I have to say it reminded me of none of those episodes. In fact the first thing that came to my mind was Nemisis, which was horrid. Even the CG effects looked too busy. That reminded me of the Star Wars prequels, in which battles did not flow so much as be smashed on the screen in one chaotic mess. No, I'm sorry to say I am not looking forward to this film

The movie isn't supposed to be a traditional prequel. It's a reboot.

I never got into TOS as i grew up on TNG and DS9. I would love a DS9 movie but i don't think that will happen. Everyone is too old now. It would be a bunch of old guys running around in diapers firing phasers. Not exactly the star trek i'm looking for. If they don't "reboot" the franchise, it will just die out. After Enterprise I don't think Paramount wants to risk another TV series.

I think it look great so far. I loved the serious nature of DS9 and the later TNG so i'm all for it. Because I never got into TOS, I'm even more excited because this movie will show those characters in a different light. It'll never replace the other movies though.

Enterprise wasn't supposed to be a traditional prequel either, and when the fans didn't like it, they then pushed general fanservice and that even seemed to fail as well.

They ignored set standards in the other series, and tried to pretend some events in the "star trek timeline" didn't happen... O.o

of course the fans and their paying attention and nitpicking have always been the bane of the writers....

I liked the first season of Enterprise but it never hooked me enough to watch it through to the end. I'm a treky but I'm not a hardcore fan so using some creative freedom to make it a little different is ok by me. As long as it feels like the star trek i'm used to, I'm all good.
