well that's the difference between the dub and the japanese. in the japanese his voice is supposed to be the prideful, arogant prince, in the dub he's a sadistic, evil psychopath, the perception of his character changes from one to the other.
True, but when he realised his dragonball was missing on Namek, he seemed pretty psycho rather than prideful to me.

true, but most dbz characters go nuts in one way or another when something really dramatic happens to them, goku's transformation into a super saiyen was when he was super pissed at the world since almost all of his friends had just been killed.

I pretty much agree with everything the OP said.

Perhaps we're all hardwired from birth to watch Anime a certain way, in which case I'm eternally grateful I had the luck to be flexible to both extremes.

I'm only posting here because someone bumped the thread in-time to be caught under the boredom that I'm currently suffering from.

I will have to honestly agree with your points. Though I am not so hot on dubs anymore due to one major screw-up: Naruto.

If Toonami hadn't already fucked up my perspective of the show, "loopy-fist" did.

I can understand replacing most of the 'Dammits!' and 'shit..' with 'believe it!' and 'oh man!' (and even sake with 'elixirs') but when you take drunkenfist and replace it with 'loopy-fist' turning one of the only acceptably awesome characters into a retarded moron using a technique so queer that simply saying it outloud makes the fab-five subsequently itch in their rotten little crotches, you have quite clearly stepped over, and pissed on my line in the sand.

I may be over-reacting to this. I may be splitting hairs and leaving out NUMEROUS of important details that would help to better explain my newly found dislike of dubs, but this is simply the one, pure and clean-cut moment that stands out among all-else.

THEY TURNED MY FUCKING DRUNKENFIST INTO LOOPY-DOOPY-DOODY-FUCKING-DO-FIST.

That is all for my spamming tonight.

Meh, I watch dubs because I like to piss off sub nazis. :P

I used to be a really big subtitle nazi back in the day. Some shows I prefer subbed and some dubbed. To each his own I guess.

These professional dub voice actors quite often underpreform, in my opinion, which drives me nuts. The acting seems so blahzze so many times.

To say which version of an anime is superior is a matter of opinion, and to make a statement that one version is definitely better is pompous. Both dubs and subtitles have their place and good points. I watch both, it depends on the mood I am in. (I watch raw, too. As someone who comprehends a good 90% of the dialogue without reading subtitles, I can assure you that, to me anyway, the experience is quite different.)

I will say this, though. In recent years, my complaints about subs are becoming less and less different from my complaints about subtitles. It's becoming less of a problem with the acting and direction, and more of a problem with the translation or localization. If you want to see a terrible translation job affecting both subbing and subtitling, just watch Funimation's School Rumble DVDs. If you wanna see it done right, check out the Haruhi Suzumiya DVDs, or for that matter, most things Bandai does. They are definitely on the ball lately.

Anyway, the sub/sub argument is so old, I've heard probably almost everything that can be said, and most of the arguments are really just matters of opinion. It's best to accept peoples' opinions rather than argue about them. The problem now and in the past is the attitudes of people, the elitism of both sides, and the passion with which people argue this subject into the dirt.

Did you honestly expect them to keep the original name? There would be no way in hell that a drunk minor would be passed on CN despite the TV-PG rating. Besides, the uncut DVDs more than likely have it as drunkenfist.

The Uncuts are TV-14, so all that stuff should be back in.

I hate sub-worshippers though, they constantly say "if it's not in Japanese you're not getting the entire experience. Like I care about the Japanese language, it's not sacred. They keep saying, "if you don't watch it in Japanese with subs you're not a "true" fan." That's like showing someone from Japan a Disney movie and making them watch it in English with a Japanese fansub, how long are they going to last? Not long I'd think.

What really ticks me off is that they've invaded Hulu, a legal streaming site that has a decent amount of anime and they're trying to make it a subtitle only anime site, But I watched Mushi-Shi there and I love it, and guess what? It's in ENGLISH! I seriously tried to watch Death Note, but I got so tired of reading that I only got through five episodes, because it was subtitles only (I may or may not try to finish, I've heard the show is great).

To sub-worshippers, quit trying to push your "subtitle-only" ideology on us, you people make anime look like it's some kind of "elite art form" and you all just need to shut up and go off to watch your subs and leave people alone.
