Do You Hide Your Hobby?

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime.

Postby TackySushi » Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:50 pm

I never used to, but now that I'm out of highschool and starting anew, I find that I don't really want to bring it up.

When people find out I like anime, I feel that they stereotype me into a freaky, cosplaying, pokemon catching, Japanese phrase shouting otaku. And that's not what I am.

And I'm not dissing anyone who has any of these qualities either. I just don't want to be known for that. I'd rather people know me for who I am rather than what I'm into.

But if someone brings it up first, I'm usually willing to discuss it.

Hehe, that was the day i went to New York Anime Festival last year, if you look real close, you can see a few posters and videogames in the background.

I guess I have it easy.

I'm old, and I don't have parents to deal with I AM the parent :)

My hobby room doesn't just scream anime fan. Actually it likely says I have an obsession with war.

Most would not realize all the furniture was made by me not bought.

The shelf's worth of literature on trains doesn't stand out too loudly.

The rolegaming books are really just 3 manuals, so that is nearly invisible.

And there's zero chance of being able to tell that all of the above takes a back seat to my love of cosmology and planetology.

If a person sees your anime and can't think you are anything but an anime geek, pity them for the retards they are and stop worrying about them.

I'm also with the "don't ask don't tell" but i still do feel a bit awkward when i'm seeing anime and outsiders come along and asks, though i just answer normally as i was seeing a movie. Anyways, most of my friends are also into anime, though not AMV making, so it's not a big issue for me.

I don't mention it much since I'm one of the few, and I mean few, people in my school that like anime. However, I'm not afraid to mention it to some people as long as I have the confidence that they won't make some stupid hentai comment and the topic is relevant.

When my family comes over, I don't bother hiding it because most of it is stored in a cabinet anyway.

Do I hide it?

...Why yes. Yes I do.

I mean, if someone ELSE starts talking about one of my favorite animes first, I'll happily talk their ears off with all my psychopath theories and stuff. But if nobody is talking about it and nobody specifically asks me "Do you like anime?" it takes hours of begging to get me to answer the simple question "What's your favorite show?"

Around my friends I try not to hide it, but It is hard trying to explaining to them that it is not some crazy j porno.

Oh god, I try to hard a lot of it from my family. My sister has a deep hate for anime and amvs. She has to leave the house when I show my family any type of anime related video.

All my dvds are usually kept in a cabinet, out of sight anyways.
For those posters I have.. I do take them down when people are coming over. My Dnangel poster with dark and niwa touching each others chests just SCREAMS yaoi.. :) It will only give them the wrong impression =[

How does someone develope such a deep hate for anime? I can understand disliking it, but to actually have to leave a house?

Anyway, do I hide it? Yeah, sort of. At high school and middle school I didn't really hide all that much since my freinds were also into it and in high school I was the president of a club for it. I'm in college now though, and I never really see a reason to ever bring it up, with the expect of once in art class to make a point about speed lines.

At work I never bring it up, because aside from one of my co-workers kids, everyone there is to old and mature for anime. It's actually quite stressful, because I'm the youngest one there and the age gaps are amazing. so while everyone else can talk about who is pregnent, I just try to follow along and shut my trap.

Family wise I don't hid it at all. My older brothers are just as big into anime as I am. My room is completely anime themed. My dad likes the stuff as well and even though it took a while (because just had to show her Chobits, Hand Maid May, and Miyuki-chan in Wonderland first) my mom finally understands and is okay with it (She likes Sailor Moon, and Love Hina).
