Stepping it up to vegas, but what kind of version?

Postby XiaoMovieMaker » Wed Sep 10, 2008 7:59 pm

Alright, so i've been using MAGIX for the past few years, and I don't plan to abandon it, but I want to get some new software, to expand my horizons.

I was going to get adobe, but my dad forbids me to purchase something that expensive...so i'm stuck with a 150$ budget.
Out of all the versions of Sony Vegas, which version should i get? [I.E. Vegas 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, platinum edition, pro, etc etc]

Here's a link, with some great prices btw. I'd like to know exactly what item is worth purchasing, thanks again!

the biggest tip i can offer is dont just buy it. most video editing programs offer a full use trial, dont waste the money on something that you may not like.

I agree that you should try at the trails first, but as far as amvs go, versions 6.0-9.0 are all just as good, so whichever's the cheapest. I use 6.0.

Bear in mind that you can get Vegas Pro 8 a lot cheaper at B&H than you can on Amazon. (That's because it only comes with the CD; no instructions and no DVD Architect.)

I have no idea how different Vegas is from Vegas Movie Studio, though. I'd suggest not a Movie Studio edition, but that's just because I actually edit to make money and not just as a hobby, so I'm biased towards the full editions. =\

And I wouldn't know where to get earlier versions of Vegas.

And yes, always try trials first, as was said.

Movie studio edition is basically just removes the masking functions as far as I know.

Hmm, if that's the main difference, then you could probably just survive off one of the Movie Studio editions and the GIMP.

it also limits you to only 3 video lines...

my suggestion is to get some trials and see which one you like, but just so you know some of the top editors on this site use Magix so why not just stick with it?

I definitely recommend trying the different programs. I think Adobe Premiere Elements is also worth a look as well, though, like Vegas Movie Studio, you must download the trial first, to make sure you'll like it (and in Elements' case, make sure it'll run on your PC).

It depends on your computer specs. I would suggest 7.0 Pro, which is the best one. The version 8.0 might be a little more benefit to your AMV making than version 7.0, but if you have the minimum specs, simply use version 7.0
As someones said below, try the trials, and see for yourself if you like it or not.
Movie Studio and Platinum version are more cheap, but it has less capabilities than version Pro. Like masking. If you want to make really good things like the user east side assasin (or SaiyanPrideAMV on youtube), you really want to have masking.

Vegas is really fun to use, once you master it of course. I use it, and it's pretty good, specially if you cannot afford for Adobe Premiere. If you are going to buy it for sure, but you don't know where to get tutorials (the manual doesn't gives such detail of everything) try seeing montagical's tutorials in youtube.
