I don´t know the posted vid, but I suggest to think in colours and colourstyle. You know for sure the theory of cold and warm colours. Stick your nose in stuff like colour corrections and plan your own video/colours style.

I don´t have any links for you, but a simpel google search won´t be a bad idea. Just one more thing: Don´t forget that desiging websites or wallpapers can also give you good knowledge of value ;)

Grunge overlays?

Heavier shadows maybe?

I think you get a dark serious in a much more easier way without grunge overlays. It´s not that easy to use grunge without makeing the video look ridicolous or cheesy.

Oh yeah you can also decrease the contrast and make it look more matt. :)

I pretty much agree with Bauzi.

Basically all you need to do is play with the color adjustment + lighting of your shots. It also helps if you had the correct scenes to give it that "darkness feeling/theme".

I would say, just use grey coloring with old firm look, make it shake and add little bit of vinette. If you want darker look then increase the vinette

There are many ways to do it, it depends a lot on the clips you choose and the music you use. You could use a quiet yet dark song (e.g Dark Empire (remix 2.0)-X-Ray Dog), and where there are quiet, dark beats, you could make the clips black and white, maybe show some evil guy slowly revealling who he truly is, using either fade out in transition or soft flash transition would be good for this. When it comes to a part of a song where there are a lot of heavy beats, maybe show how the darkness builds or unleashes itself, maybe clips showing the fear in characters from the evil guys. Anyway, as I said, it relies heavily on the songs and clips you choose.

I'm working on a video which has a somewhat dark and sinister mood, and I used a lot of flashes, zooms, shaking, black + white stuff and colour inversions, and edited some parts to look like flashbacks and stuff.
Actually it was inspired by this video. I'm even using the same song... :o I gotta get some more inspiration instead of copying other people.
