So is this a good Gundam series? I like giant mecha fights, but I don't want to get involved unless it has a good story this time around. How does it compare to first season of Code Geass?

They cannot be compared simply because they're different genres.Ok,they both have mecha but the characters are way different and the stories too.

Gundam 00 has yet to unfold its true story but I assure you that it has both giant mecha fights and political messages. Its message is "stop the war" like every Gundam series but this time it's done in a different way. There is no clash between 2 major fractions(like in Seed and Wing) but an independent organization which fights against every other country in order to stop wars.
Still, unlike Gundam Seed,it didn't glue me to my seat from the 1st episode. Now that I've begun watching Gundam Wing(which by the way sucks a lot),I could say that 00's beginning reminded me a bit of Wing. The 1st episodes are just to show us the power of Gundams and how the major alliances are unable to withstand this power at first. But it quickly gets way better and especially after ep10 it's marvellous.Mecha designs are awesome and the animation is superb.Imo,the flaw of this series so far is the characters.Too little character development and lots of wtf deaths very quickly...

My opinion: definitely check it out. There is a 2nd season coming after Code Geass R2 and it'll surely kick ass...^^

Wing was terrible..... just terrible :/

00 is a nice break from SEED in the sense that its more plot driven than character. After going through SEED and Destiny which mainly focussed on characters I endorsed this change.

Though not really developed yet the pilot/princess pairing of 00 might be bad like Wing's, but nothing is worse than Relena x Heero -_- I really don't see Marina x Setsuna =/

umm.. I think Setsuna sees her as a mother figure rather than a lover. 4 year age difference. =\
