Is Premiere CS3 all you need for editing?

Postby FushigiNaKuniNo » Mon Jul 28, 2008 8:42 pm

I'm not asking if it's all that you strictly need, but do those of you who use CS3 use any other programs to go with it, aside from AMVapp? I figure as long as I'm getting started in AMVs, I might as well hit the ground running.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, and thank you!

Given enough time, you could cure cancer with Premiere. Disregard the fact it gave you the cancer in the first place.

XD

Thank you, that is comforting!

So you don't necessarily need another program to create most effects? I'm specifically curious about uses of AfterEffects/Photoshop, and whether if you have them you can do things that Premiere alone cannot.

If you plan on doing any extensive frame-by-frame editing/masking (such as cutting a character out and putting it on a new background), you will need either AE or Photoshop. Premiere can't do it alone; the best thing it has is a 16-point garbage matte, and you will likely need a lot more than 16 points for such a venture.

Outside of that, I can't really think of any reason to need anything other than Premiere unless you're trying to create some heavy/complicated effects.

premiere has an image key tool (or at least it does in pro 1.5)
so it's possible to do frame-by-frame rotoscoping in premiere...but it's a world easier in After Effects

You mean like luma and chromo keys? Because keying and hand-cutting something out of an image are two different things. Keying =/= Pen Tool (of Photoshop and AE).

Unless, of course, there's a tool/effect hidden in Premiere that I just don't know about (which is always possible), in which case, please clue me in, lol. I use Vegas more than I do Premiere, so I certainly don't claim to know everything there is to know about Premiere.

Image mask is a transition (pro 1.5)
when you apply it you can select a custom mask to use (any B+W .bmp file will do)

a bit crude, but it would work.
AE or Photoshop are still the way to go if you can get them.

Ah, I see. Well, they took that specific transition (lolwut?) out at some point, because it isn't in CS3. A luma key would do the exact same thing though, if applied to a black and white image. I guess that's why they ditched it.
