Special "piano" effect (Sailor Moon - Tallulah)

Postby Seether85 » Sun Jul 06, 2008 3:43 am

On this video (which I consider to be one of the most beautiful ever made) you can see several scenes with a sort of "piano effect" made by splitting the scene in some invisible vertical bars and then enhancing luminosity on each individually. Also when the "note" is playing, the video portion in its place fades somehow to gray.

I like this effect very much, but I can't find a way to get the same result (I'm using Vegas 7 pro).

Suggestions anyone? (plz just tips about Vegas, since I can only use that)

Thanks

You should probably look into Cookie Cutter. You may have to put multiple copies of the same clip on top each other on the timeline to achieve the desired effect.

Ok I found the cookie-cutter thing and it looks nice... Now, my problem is:

how do I use it correctly?

Let's say I want to add brightness to a slice of my video: I would probably need a second video track but what composition mode would fit best? I tried with Add, but this causes the whole video to turn a lot darker and I want the parts I'm not considering with the C-C to keep their original look.

this is just an example of working with the cookie cutter and adding effects to it, and adjusting the size of the cookie cutter and what not, but it might be helpful to you.

That link doesn't seem to work... :/

Anyway, I only need to know the best composing mode for the upper video track, just to keep the original video playing without loosing in brightness and such (like when using the Add mode for the upper track).

you must have tinyurl blocked then (or something), its to fwd to a youtube video, but links to that site are blocked for various reasons..

uh, add the effect you want to the clip with the cookie cutter :/

i usually just go down to the effects tab and click and drag the effect i want to the clip i want....

Mmh, I guess I didn't explain my point properly... Anyway, after a few tries I found that a second Source Alpha layer would fit best for me: adding the cookie cutter effect to it seems to make the trick. Now I only need to find out how to keep all the previously cut slices black while the video plays on...

Cut Away Section, in order to have vertical bands. Then for the brightness I'm using Luminance Mask (that's the best-looking combo I've found so far...)

well the cut parts should remain black unless you put a video under it then.

Yes, the old parts' persistance was because of the other alpha-level, which prevented the right parts from remaining black. I solved by adding another CC to the second alpha level, so I use the first one to add the luminance mask to single vertical bars, and the second to cut away already processed parts. Works well :)

With luminance mask the effect isn't as clear and smooth as in the previously mentioned AMV (Sailor Moon - Tallulah) but I couldn't find anything better for now :/

you could have changed the order of the effects to make the cookie cutter last, because the order of them does matter :3

I guess you're right... Oh well, I'm still learning after all :)

Any ideas for an alternative to the Luminance Mask? I'm uploading that piece of my video so you can see yourself: http:/www.fabulaenoctis.com/CCluminancemask.avi

Ok it's not an anime, don't blame me for that tho, plz :)

Sorry for double posting, but editing is disabled (and I really don't know why...)

Link is missing a slash, so: http://www.fabulaenoctis.com/CCluminancemask.avi
